We believe it is impor- tant to recognize those who currently serve in the mili- tary as well as those injured in the line of duty and con- sider it an honor and a duty to serve them. Whether the injury is physical or mental, get- ting a decision about So- cial Security disability ben- efits from your government shouldn't add to the prob- lems faced by the injured. Carolyn W. Colvin, Act- ing Commissioner of Social Security, recently unveiled a new initiative to expedite disability applications from veteranswithaDepartment ofVeteransAffairs(VA)dis- ability compensation rating of 100 percent Permanent and Total (P&T). Under the new process, Social Security will treat these veterans' applications as high priority and issue expedited decisions, similar tothewaywecurrentlyhan- dle disability claims from wounded warriors. Static electricity was the term used in describing the fire that damaged the au- tomobile of Mr. and Mrs. F. C. Stackman, tourists from Ocean View who were enroute to Seattle, Wash- ington, when they stopped at the service station, Main and Oak streets in Red Bluff Wednesday for gasoline. Stackman had taken off the cap and measured the gas in his car and was just begin- ning to replenish the sup- ply when a flame shot up through the center and in a moment the top was ablaze. The burning auto was moved away from the sta- tion out onto the sidewalk where the firemen found it when they arrived. — May 7, 1924 90 YEARS AGO... Cause of car fire attributed to static electricity Grilled peppery top round steak with parmesan aspar- agus from The Power of Pro- tein, from the California Beef Council. 1 beef top round steak, cut inch thick (about 1 pound) 1 pound asparagus, trimmed 1 teaspoon olive oil 3 tablespoons shredded Parmesan cheese Salt Marinade cup red wine vinegar 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 tablespoon fresh thyme 2 large cloves garlic, minced 2 teaspoons steak season- ing blend 1 teaspoon crushed red pepper Instructions 1. Combine marinade in- gredients in medium bowl. Place beef steak and mari- nade in food-safe plastic bag; turn steak to coat. Close bag securely and marinate in re- frigerator 6 hours or as long as overnight, turning occa- sionally. 2. Remove steak from marinade; discard mari- nade. Toss asparagus with oil. Place steak in center of grill over medium, ash-cov- ered coals; arrange aspara- gus around steak. Grill steak uncovered, 8 to 9 minutes for medium rare doneness, turning occasionally. Grill asparagus 6 to 10 minutes or until crisp-tender, turn- ing occasionally. 3. Immediately sprin- kle cheese over asparagus. Carve steak into thin slices. Season with salt, as desired. Serve with asparagus. Cook's tips To prepare on gas grill, preheat grill according to manufacturer's direc- tions for medium heat. Grill steak, covered, 10 to 11 min- utes for medium rare do- neness, turning once (do not overcook). Grill aspara- gus, 8 to 12 minutes or un- til crisp-tender, turning oc- casionally. To make asparagus spears easier to turn on the grill, thread them ladder- style onto two 12 inch metal skewers. Insert a skewer about 1 inch from each end of spear, leaving small space between spears. Use tong to turn en- tire asparagus ladder for even cooking. Makes 4 servings. To- tal preparation and cooking time: 30 to 40 minutes. Marinating time: 6 hours or overnight.
