He found it on Raeford Road. "It was always mine and my wife's goal to own our own business and the opportu- nity presented itself," said Whiteaker. "And really, it was just such a good opportunity that we couldn't pass it up." For the past five years or so, Sammio's has been serving up high quality food from their location at 2623 Raeford Rd. Although ownership has changed, Whiteaker prom- ises that nothing else has — after all, when something is not broken, why try to fix it? "I feel some pressure because they've been there for 15-16 years and have got a rep- utation out there that I need to try and hold up," said Whiteaker, adding that learning on the job hasn't been a problem. "I'd do it again. I mean what better way to learn than just getting put in the middle of it really?" With the help of man- ager Joey Hair, who has been with Sammio's for 17 years, Whiteaker is not only learning the ropes, but continuing the legacy of success. The recipes that have been bringing in crowds for years are still on the menu. "The secret could be in our sauces," said Hair. "It is well known that we don't let anybody know about our sauce recipe. It is homemade and we make it fresh every day... that is a big seller right there. Our meat sauce — another good seller — and Sam's Chicken — that's another family recipe and customer favorite." Oh yeah and the Greek baked chicken, which is only served on Sunday's, has a cult like following as well. It's a half chicken marinated in Greek herbs for two days and then baked to juicy perfection. "The church people love it," said Hair. "A lot of people come here mainly for that." So the food is good, what about the prices? "Our lunch specials on this side of town are really good," said Hair. "We have 15 to 16 lunch specials for around $5.99, they kill it everyday. From 11 to 2:30 it is packed in here." And it is not just lunch that is a steal. "We are probably the cheapest place you can go and you get good, quality food, good portions and good service," said Hair. "Instead of going somewhere and paying 18 or 19 bucks for chicken alfredo they can come here and pay 8 or 9." Sammio's also does full service catering and is equipped to handle special events with crowds up to 150 people. They are open Mon. to Thurs. 11 a.m. - 9:30 p.m., Fri. - Sat. 11 a.m. - 10 p.m., and Sun. 10:30 a.m. - 9 p.m. Visit www.sammios.com for more info. 3 rd Annual Bike Ride for Sam to benefi t Histiocytosis Association of America & UNC Children's Hospital September 26, 2009 Starting point is St. Patrick Catholic Church at 2844 Village Drive in Fayetteville.
