On Friday, Sept. 25, Lynyrd Skynyrd tribute band Tuesday's Gone will perform at the Sol Rose Amphitheatre as a part of the Campbellton Landing Salute to the Armed Forces concert series. Lead singer Ryan King has been a Lynyrd Skynyrd fan since he was about 5-years-old. "I grew up a huge fan (of Lynyrd Skynyrd) and actually they are the reason that back when I was 5, I started playing music," said King. "They just inspired me through the years. I became one of those overly obsessive people that knew way too much about a band that they liked than they ever should." Even though King was pas- sionate about Lynyrd Skynyrd and a musician in his own right, for years he resisted forming a tribute band despite the many offers he received. "I said 'No, I think that is one of the tribute things that probably should not be touched 'cause if it is not done 100 percent people are going to hate it,'" King noted. That all changed five years ago at a birthday celebration. King was at a club in Raleigh and it happened to be open mic night. A few guys approached him and asked if he wanted to get on stage and rock some Skynyrd. "I was like 'Yeah. Sure, why not? You guys do your thing,' and I was think- ing they would just want to play "Sweet Home Alabama" and a few things like that, but they got up there and they played awesome Skynyrd cuts like "I Ain't the One" and "That Smell," said King. "My jaw dropped and I enjoyed every second of it — and I wasn't allowing anyone to leave that place before I got all of their contact info. We started rehearsing two weeks later and the rest is history." In two words King describes the band's sound as very authentic. Their thing is 1970s Lynyrd Skynyrd, no twists, no turns, no bells or whistles — it's the strong, simple Southern Rock that Generation X grew up with. The only excep- tion to that is the 2003 release "Red, White and Blue." "We love doing towns where troops are strong," King explained. "About a year ago we were playing in front of a bunch of troops and we had been getting a lot of heat on our website asking 'How come you don't do "Red, White and Blue?"' It is a newer song. It came out in '03 and we have always done the '70s stuff and that was our reason. Everyone said 'You should break that tra- dition and just play it.' We did the song and it just went over so well that we've been doing it ever since — because we love our military." With King singing lead vocals, John Pereksta and Noble O'Rourke on guitar, Jason Patterson pounding the drums, Mark Roper playing bass and Greg Knapp on the keyboard, the band is ready to rock the Cape Fear River Basin. If you are a die-hard Skynyrd fan, come on down, King promises that you won't be disap- pointed. If you are luke-warm fan or only a little familiar, King's goal is to make you a hard-core fan before the night is over. "One thing we have proven over and over that we do is turn the person that has never been a huge Skynyrd fan — but they come out anyway — and by the time they leave our show we will have them turned in to a bona fide Skynyrd fan," said King. Godsmack fans can come out and hear ReAlign, the ultimate Godsmack tribute band. Formed in 2005, the members have switched up a few times, but the sound is still pure hard core heavy metal rock -n- roll. Godsmack had the most Top 10 hits in active rock history, which are some mighty big shoes to fill, but ReAlign fans know what a great show they put on and according to their myspace page there should be quite a crowd.
