The Red Bluff Fire Department was dispatched around 7:40 a.m. Monday to a Walton Drive home fully charged with smoke, according to a press re- lease. The homeowner said she and her daughter found fire in the kitchen and fled the home. They flagged down Greenwaste employee Hector Dominguez making his rounds. Dominguez was able to knock down the fire us- ing a dry chemical extinguisher, according to the release. The fire had started in a pan containing cook- ing oil that had burst into flames. It burned the stove and countertop appliances before spreading to the cabinets above the stove and filled the home with smoke. The occupants of the home escaped without in- jury. Firefighters rescued a pet bird from the smoke- filled home and then used power blowers to clear the smoke from the home. Firefighters caution against leaving cooking food unattended, especially when cooking with oil. The party-like atmo- sphere during the 16th an- nual Cinco de Mayo multi- cultural celebration hosted by Latino Outreach of Te- hama County featured a healthy field of information vendors, music, food and ac- tivities. Recording artist and Red Bluff High School graduate Daniel Munoz joined in the festivities. Some attendees put their dancing shoes on to follow U-Jam Fitness instructors in dance routines set to such songs as Pitbull's "Timber," and Lil Jon's "Outta Your Mind." Children, some with painted faces, could gain some air in a bounce house, or play some games provided by the vendor booths. Here's a look of the numerous classic cars on display at the show. By Andre Byik abyik@redbluffdailynews.com @andrebyik on Twitter CORNING The 18th annual May Madness Car Show drew hundreds Saturday to down- town Corning, where vendors greeted, firefighters mustered, singers competed and car lov- ers were treated to an array of the classics — such as the silver 1964 Chevrolet Impala with the white top that was parked under the Rodgers Theatre marquee. Entered by Orland resi- dents Mychal and Francine Hamlin, the car sat low to the ground, and its chrome trim brilliantly reflected the pass- ers-by on Solano Street. Mychal Hamlin said he's had the car since he was 15 years old, initially finding it in a beaten-up state. Over the years, Mychal, now 34, put a lot of time and a lot of money toward restoring the Chevro- let, which had picked up a tro- phy at a previous car show. Driving the car, however, could be its own reward.
