The extreme heat will hold over the South Central states, but a few daily high temperature records will be challenged farther to the east in the South. Cool air is forecast to hold from the Great Lakes to the Northeast. As one area of showers moves off the mid-Atlantic coast, another zone of rainfall is forecast to hold over northern New England. An extensive area of rain, high country snow and locally strong storms will reach from California to the Dakotas. Rescue teams led a search for up to seven more people missing, in what was one of the deadliest migrant boat accidents in Greek wa- ters in recent years and the third fatal one this year. Many on board were from war-torn or unstable coun- tries in the Middle East and Africa. The vessels overturned before dawn Monday off the island of Samos, a fa- vorite destination for mi- grant-smuggling gangs be- cause it's close to the Turk- ish coast. The Greek coast guard said it was not imme- diately clear what caused the overloaded craft to cap- size. Photos taken at the scene showed a dead woman clasping a dead child in her arms inside the yacht, as coast guards hoisted the vessel upright on land with a crane. GREECE Sm ug gl in g boats capsize, 22 m ig ra nt s drown By Radul Radovanovic The Associated Press ODESSA,UKRAINE Ukraine sent an elite national guard unit to re-establish control Monday over the southern port of Odessa and govern- ment troops fought pitched gunbattles with a pro-Rus- sia militia around an east- ern city. The twin moves reflected an apparent escalation of ef- forts to bring both regions back under Kiev's control. The possible double loss of Odessa in the southwest and parts of eastern Ukraine could be catastrophic for the new government, leav- ing the country landlocked, cut off entirely from the Black Sea. Ukraine already lost a significant part of its coast- line in March, when its Black Sea peninsula of Crimea was annexed by Russia. Gunfire and multiple ex- plosions rang out Monday in and around Slovyansk, a city of 125,000 that has be- come the focus of the armed insurgency against the new interim government in Kiev. Interior Minister Arsen Avakov said in a statement thatgovernmenttroopswere battling about 800 pro-Rus- sia forces that were using large-caliber weapons and mortars. His agency said four officers were killed and 30 wounded in the fighting. Pro-Russia militias said at least eight people, both insurgents and local resi- dents, were killed. A mili- tia spokesman three of 10 people admitted with gun- shot wounds to a hospital in Slovyansk had died. Five more were killed during fighting in the village of Se- menivka. This nation of 46 million is facing its worst crisis in decades after its Russia- leaning president, who hails from Ukraine's industrial east, fled to Russia in Feb- ruary following months of street protests. Those east- ern regions that favor closer links to Russia are now at odds with Ukraine's west- ern and central areas, which seek closer ties with Europe and largely support the new interim government in Kiev. The West has offered bil- lions of dollars in loans to help the Kiev government stave off economic collapse. Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk said Ukraine ex- pects to receive more than $5 billion in May, accord- ing to a statement Mon- day. This includes $3 billion from the International Mon- etary Fund, $1 billion from the United States and up to $1.38 billion from the Euro- pean Union. The goal of the pro-Rus- sia insurgency is ostensi- bly geared toward pushing for broader autonomy for local regions, but some in- surgents do favor seceding from Ukraine and joining Russia. In the last few weeks, pro-Russia forces have stormed and seized govern- ment buildings and police stations in a dozen eastern Ukrainian cities. Authori- ties in Kiev accuse Moscow of backing the insurgents and — since Russia has kept tens of thousands of troops along Ukraine's eastern bor- der — fear that Russia could try to invade and grab more territory.
