Monday, May 2, 2011 – Daily News – 5B Cinco De Mayo celebration Shasta College announces the 20th Annual Cinco de Mayo Celebration will be 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, May 5, in the Shasta College Student Center Quad. Activities include dances by Ballet Folklorico Azatlan and by the Anderson Teen Center Ballet Folklorico; a keynote presenta- tion by Shasta College instructor and scholar in Latin American History, Chris Rodriguez; a baleros competition; performances from the Shasta College Puente Club; a tamale lunch; sing-a- longs; pinata breaking for children; dance lessons; and more. Birding outings for spring Birding activities in May Mt. Shasta Area Audubon is sponsoring three North State bird- ing field trips in May and June, just in time to hear colorful males calling to potential mates and seeing nesting behavior typical for this time of the year. “Participants will really have a special opportunity to view unique bird species in their habitats,” said Jim Flett, field trip organizer. “The trip leaders are highly experienced and know where to find birds such as pygmy nuthatches, Williamson’s sap- sucker and Hutton’s vireo.” The first field trip is the annual Migratory Birds Celebration on Saturday, May 7, at the Shasta Valley Wildlife Area. Meet at the headquarters office, half a mile inside the refuge. The wildlife area is east of Montague on Ball Mountain and Little Shasta roads. A representative from the Klamath Bird Observatory will be addressing attendees. The refuge tour will include areas not open to the general public. Guides will include wildlife biologist Sam Cuenca, Ray Ekstrom, Bob Claypole, and Joey Russell. For questions, call Cuenca at 469-1207. Happy Camp’s River Park will be the setting for the Sunday, May 15, birding trip led by Bob Claypole, author of the Bird Guide to the Klamath River. The last field trip of this series will be going to the McCloud River area with expert birder Joey Russell on Saturday, June 18.
