ByRichGreene rgreene@redbluffdailynews.com @richgreenenews on Twitter REDBLUFF The2014LesSchwab Tires and Halekala Ranch Red Bluff Pro-Am tees off Saturday at Wilcox Oaks Golf Club with the tournament's annual three-per- son Amateur Horse Race. The real action gets going at 7:40 a.m. Sunday when the first of 30 teams, made up of one pro- fessional and four amateurs, tees off for the two-round tournament. The final round starts at the same time Monday, where $17,350 is up for grabs in the professional division, another $3,000 for the senior division and $13,800 more for the amateurs. The Pro-Am, entering its 23rd year, has a new title cosponsor this year in Halekala Ranch as well as a new head tournament organizer in Jeff Phelps. Phelps took over the position as head golf professional at Wil- cox Oaks about six months ago. Phelps said other than those changes, the format for the three days of events has remained the same. Defending champion Greg Senestraro returns a year after he beat 2010 champion Dave Carr in a playoff. It was the second time in the past three years the Pro-Am has come down to a playoff. In a memorable final, Joe Carl- ton eagled out from 70 yards to claim the 2011 championship in a three-person playoff that in- cluded Carr. Carr, who plays out of Teal Bend Golf Club, returns this year and with his string of high fin- ishes in Red Bluff is considered a tournament favorite. One man who's had a couple of near-misses in attempting to cap- ture the title in Red Bluff is Isaac Sanchez. While Sanchez has been the pro paired with the back-to-back amateur team champions the past two years, the professional title has eluded him. With his imposing frame, San- chez was always easy to spot on a local golf course, but he's even more recognizable now after ap- pearing on the Golf Channel's "Big Break Greenbrier." Sanchez, who plays out of Se- villano Links in Corning, is sched- uled to play on the PGA Tour next month. It's a dream the man known as "Sasquatch" says he has had since he was 10 years old. But while Sanchez said "Big Break" has been a life-changer that has taught him how to han- dle extreme pressure situations, there's another challenge loom- ing this weekend — Wilcox Oaks' treacherous Back 9. Sanchez said over the years he has found the golfer who han- dles the Back 9 the best, will find themselves in position to win the Pro-Am come Monday. J.J, Abraham and Jarrod War- ner have conquered the Back 9 in the past. Both have won the Pro- Am twice and will play this week- end. They join Senestraro, Carr and Jason Schmul as former champi- ons in the field. Phelpssaysanotherwildcardto lookoutforinthefieldisRedBluff's own Josh Westmoreland, who grew up playing at Wilcox Oaks. Another hometown golfer to watch for is Steve Deveraux. Saturday's Amateur Horse Race is scheduled for 3 p.m., fol- lowed by hor d'oeuvres and no- host cocktails. Following Sunday's first round there will be a helicopter ball drop and a two-person Pro-am Horse Race. Play Monday should conclude around 4:30 p.m. GOLF RedBluffPro-Amto teeoffthisweekend New sponsor and head professional, but same prestige and fun at 23rd annual event RICHGREENE—REDBLUFFDAILYNEWS Wilcox Oaks Golf Club head golf professional Jeff Phelps tees off on the ninth hole Thursday. Phelps and Wilcox Oaks host the 23rd annual Les Schwab tires and Halekala Ranch Red Bluff Pro-Am golf tournament this Saturday through Monday. By Josh Dubow The Associated Press ALAMEDA For a franchise with a frustrating history of postsea- son flops, the latest collapse sent the San Jose Sharks to a new low. The Sharks became the fourth team in NHL history to lose a best-of-seven series after win- ning the first three games, get- ting overwhelmed at home in a 5-1 loss in Game 7 on Wednesday night to start a pivotal offseason for a team looking to shed the la- bel of playoff underachievers. "We obviously don't want to hear that kind of stuff, but what are we going to say? We were on the wrong side of history tonight," defenseman Brad Stuart said. "It's tough for us to argue with anything that's said. We let our- selves down, we let the fans down, we let everybody in our organiza- tion down. It's not a good feeling. There's not really much else you can say about it." San Jose has the second-most regular-season wins in the NHL the past 10 seasons but has never made it past the conference finals. There was the first-round loss to Anaheim in 2009 after posting the best record in the league in the regular season, second-round losses to inferior teams like Ed- monton in 2006 and Dallas two years later, and three defeats in NHL PLAYOFFS Sharkshitnewlowincollapsevs.Kings History of postseason flops continues for San Jose a er Game 7 loss having led series 3-0 MARCIO JOSE SANCHEZ — THE ASSOCIATED PRESS San Jose Sharks goalie Antti Niemi (right) deflects a shot next to teammate Brad Stuart (7) and the Los Angeles Kings' Anze Kopitar in the second period in Game 7Wednesday in San Jose.
