Mark grew up in north Dallas, attended Richardson High School and earned a B.B.A. in finance from U.T. Austin in 1983. He then attended the South Texas College of Law in Houston. Mark practiced law in Dallas in the area of insurance defense and in 1988 moved to Odessa to open his own practice. In 1993, he was elected to the bench and served as judge of County Court at Law #2 for the past 20 years. In recent years, Mark served as a founding member of the Beta Mu Pike Alumni Advisory Board. Involved in his community and profession, Mark also served as president of the Odessa Chapter of Texas Exes, president of the Texas County Court at Law Judges Association, board member of the Texas Center for the Judiciary, finance committee member of First United Methodist Church and board member of the Commemorative Air Force. Mark's battle with cancer never slowed him from spending time fishing, hunting, traveling and serving as a judge. He loved nothing more than visiting his children in Austin at the Pike and Chi Omega houses and attending Longhorn football games. Mark is survived by his wife of 27 years, Teresa Henderson Owens (whom he met during his U.T. days), son, mark owens ii '08, and daughter, Merritt Owens; parents, Dee and Mack Owens; and brother, Lensey Owens. Memorial services were held in Odessa on March 4, 2014, with Beta Mu alumni Bill Peterson '80, Zach mcfarlane '07, trevor Black '08 and matt Phelan '09 in attendance. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, 415 N. Lee St., Odessa, TX 79761. Teresa Owens may be reached at 4236 Springbrook Dr., Odessa, TX 79762. Mark Owens '80 (left) with pledge brother Robert Howden '80 at their 30th pledge class reunion in 2009 in Austin. honoring a loyal Pike Brother, harry gump '40 H arry a. gump sr. '40 entered Chapter Eternal on February 18, 2014, at age 91. Born in Tulsa, Okla., his family moved to Dallas in 1927. Harry pledged Pike at U.T. in 1940 but his education was interrupted for several years by World War II, where he trained and served as a pilot in the Army Air Corps in overseas assignments. Harry returned to Austin to complete his education and eventually became Beta Mu president. After graduation, Harry moved to Harlingen and began work as a general insurance agent. He married Charlotte Dabney in 1951 and later moved back to Dallas to start Harry A. Gump Insurance, which eventually merged with Ligon, Gump & Ligon in 1973, and grew to become one of north Texas's largest insurance brokerages. Bill aufricht '46 knew and admired Harry. Bill said, "There are not enough adjectives to describe what a good man Harry was and what a great life he led." Bill fondly recalls those upperclassmen's fun four-bedroom apartment near campus nicknamed the "Passion Pit." Some of Harry's Pike roommates in those days were wayne Price '44, wall street norman '40 and Pinky Clarke '40. Bill later lived in the famous apartment and, like Harry, became Beta Mu SMC. Bill called Harry and some of the Pike war veterans "elder statesmen" in the late 1940s and credits Harry and his peers for providing the vision and laying the foundation for the land acquisition for a permanent Pike house at 2400 Leon Street. Harry is survived by his wife of 63 years, Charlotte; children: Robert, Richard, Mary Hennighausen and husband Fred, Bill '73 and wife Lauren, and allen '76 and wife Kim; 16 grandchildren; and nine great- grandchildren. Bill can be reached at bgump@tower-commercial.com and Allen at allen.gump@colliers.com. Memorials in Harry's name can be sent to the non-profit Love 146, P.O. Box 66253, Houston, TX 77266.
