Crime Stoppers BBQ Returns When people think of Crime Stoppers, they don’t usually associate it with BBQ — unless they’re from Fayetteville that is. The Fayetteville Cumberland County Crime Stoppers organization has been cooking up some of the best BBQ in the county for almost 30 years. And the only time you can get it is during the Dogwood Festival. BBQ Fundraiser Friday, April 29 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Harris Teeter Parking Lot The Crime Stoppers have been a part of the Dogwood Festival since it began doing the BBQ fundraiser 27 years ago, and there is no sign of them slowing down anytime soon. They serve close to 3,000 plates each year and look to increase that number this year, too. With such a yummy recipe — one that they’ve been using for years — folks know what to expect and like that they can count on the food to be just as delicious this year as it has been in the past. It also doesn’t hurt that the money is going to such a good cause, one that affects each and every citizen in the area. Every year the funds raised at the Dogwood Festival are put right back in to the Crime Stoppers organization. The money is used to hand out rewards for folks who are willing and able to offer up information on crimes that have been committed in our community. The BBQ sale is the biggest fundraiser for the organization. It takes the work of 60-75 volunteers to pull 2 DOGWOOD FESTIVAL APRIL 27 - MAY 3, 2011 off this event, but they come through every year. Check the Highland Center parking lot in front of Harris Teeter Raeford Road on April 29. The Crime Stoppers will be there serving up their southern fare from 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. The price is still $6 a plate, which includes potato salad, coleslaw and a dinner role. The hours make it convenient for lunch or dinner, or both! Delivery is available for orders of 15 plates or more and you can order tickets in advance too. Call 624-6922 and ask for Duncan Hubbard. “Crime Stoppers continues to benefi t our community by taking people off the road that need to be off the road,” said former Crime Stoppers chairman and current board member Duncan Hubbard. “People don’t realize how much investigations cost and how many man hours go into investigating crime. When we get tips that pay off that is money that is saved, it’s tax payer dollars that we can put to good use in other areas, and in this economy we definitely don’t want to waste our resources. We need to be as efficient and cost effective as we can.” Since its inception, Crime Stoppers has received more than 16,034 calls that have resulted in 3,979 felony arrests, more than $4,800,000 in recovered property, $1,800,000 in recovered narcotics and more than 2,400 cases solved by arrest. Those are big results for an organization that relies mostly on participation and good citizenship from the community to keep them in business. People are asked to call Crime Stoppers at 483-TIPS if they have information regarding criminal activity. If the information provided results in a case being solved, you could receive a reward for as much as $1,000. For more information visit the website at www.fay-crimestoppers.org.
