Many in our community might not feel that they have reason to celebrate. Their homes, their belongings, their health have been taken away from them in the six seconds it took the tornado to sweep through their neighborhood. And still, they awoke the next morning to a beautiful Carolina spring day. It may not have been in their home, and their heads may not have been on their own pillows, but the next morning, they got up. Ready to start over, to begin again. I think that kind of resiliency and strength of character is the hallmark of this community. Time after time we suffer losses, but we pick ourselves back up and look for the joy that is sure to come. This past week we’ve seen the heart of our community as countless people have opened their hearts, their closets and their wallets to lend a hand to their neighbors in need. We’ve seen the pictures of volunteers laboring side by side with the tornado victims to clean up the debris. We’ve seen hands extended from all directions, from people from every walk of life. Race, religion or social standing hasn’t come into play. It’s been all about neighbors helping neighbors. If the good people who are working so diligently to sell our community to the people in Atlanta who are contemplating a move here need a selling point, then this is the snapshot they should take. This past week speaks to the heart of our community, who we are and who we can be when the chips are down. I’ve no doubt that the spirit of cooperation and giving that has been so evident this week will continue on. And, that my friends is a reason to celebrate. And, we have the perfect opportunity to celebrate as the Fayetteville’s Weather Forecast Thursday April 28 Friday April 29 Saturday April 30 Fayetteville’s Weather Forecast Resiliency and strength of character is the hallmark of this community. Dogwood Festival begins a month-long celebration of our community. So take some time to fi nd the joy and get out and join in the festivities. The Dogwood Festival has been an institution in our community for more than 27 years. Through the hard work of its director, Carrie King, and her conscientious board, the festival has grown and (pardoned the pun) blossomed into an event we can all be proud of. The festival has taken home numerous regional and national awards, but the true test to its success is the countless local citizens who return year after year to participate. This year’s event looks to be just as great as the past few. So be sure to check out the calendar of events in the special Dogwood section of this issue. There’s going to be a lot to see and do over the upcoming week, so get some rest and get ready for a joyous weekend. Coming on the heels of the Dogwood Festival is the 31 Days of Glory celebration. This event is designed to honor the men and women in our community who put on their uniforms every day (and those who have retired). With the economy taking center stage in the news, it is easy for most of the nation to forget that we still have sons and daughters, fathers and mothers, in harm’s way. But that’s not something this community ever forgets. So throughout the month of May we will celebrate those who have returned, pray for those who are still away and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifi ce. Our community knows much of what the Psalmist wrote. We haved endured the weeping of sorrow, and we somehow make it through to the other side and fi nd joy in the morning. Celebrate. You JANICE BURTON, Associate Publisher, deserve it.
