By Mark Sherman The Associated Press WASHINGTON » Grappling with fast-changing technol- ogy, Supreme Court justices debated Tuesday whether they can protect the copy- rights of TV broadcasters to the shows they send out without strangling innova- tions in the use of the inter- net. The high court heard ar- guments in a dispute be- tween television broadcast- ers and Aereo Inc., which takes free television sig- nals from the airwaves and charges subscribers to watch the programs on lap- top computers, smartphones and even their large-screen televisions. The case has the potential to bring big changes to the television in - dustry. But several justices ex- pressed concern that a rul- ing for the broadcasters could hamper the burgeon- ing world of cloud comput- ing, which gives users ac- cess to a vast online com- puter network that stores and processes information. Justice Stephen Breyer said the prospect makes him nervous. "Are we somehow catching other things that would really change life and shouldn't?" Breyer asked. Paul Clement, represent - ing the broadcasters, tried to assure the court it could draw an appropriate line be- tween Aereo's service and cloud computing generally. People who merely retrieve what they have stored should have no reason to worry, Clement said. But David Frederick, repre - senting Aereo, said the "cloud computing industry is freaked out about the case" because it sees its $10 billion investment at risk if the court were to hold that anytime music or an im- age is stored online and then retrieved, the copyright law would be implicated. The discussion veered be - tween references to Roku, a TV streaming device, and other high-tech gadgets on the one hand, and analogies to coat-check rooms and va - let parking in an effort to make matters more under- standable on the other. There was even Breyer's quaint ref- erence to a "phonograph re- cord store." SCOTUS In In te rn et T V ca se , justices show concern J. DaviD ake — The associaTeD Press videojournalists set up Tuesday outside of the supreme court in Washington. By Jason Straziuso The Associated Press NAIROBI,KeNyA» Thetowns- folk believed the mosque was safe. They crammed inside as rebel forces in South Su- dan took control of the town from government troops. But it wasn't safe. Robbers grabbed their cash and mo - bile phones. Then gunmen came and opened fire on ev- eryone, young and old. The U.N. says hundreds of civilians were killed in the massacre last week in Bentiu, the capital of South Sudan's oil-producing Unity state, a tragic reflection of long - standing ethnic hostilities in the world's newest country. "Piles and piles" of bod- ies were left behind after the shootings, said Toby Lan- zer, the top U.N. aid official in South Sudan. Many were in the mosque. Others were in the hospital. Still more lit - tered the streets. The vio- lence appears to have been incited in part by calls on the radio for revenge attacks, in- cluding rapes. The attack, which tar- geted members of certain ethnic groups, was a dis- turbing echo of what hap- pened two decades ago in an- other country in eastern Af- rica. Rwanda is marking the 20th anniversary this month of a genocide that killed an estimated 1 million people and also saw orders to kill broadcast over the radio. Thousands of people have been killed in violence in South Sudan since De - cember, when presiden- tial guards splintered and fought along ethnic lines. The violence later spread across the country as sol - diers loyal to President Salva Kiir, an ethnic Dinka, tried to put down a rebellion led by Riek Machar, the for - mer vice president and an ethnic Nuer.
