Easter service First Sothern Baptist Church invites everyone to its Easter celebration at 11 a.m. on April 24. The church is at 585 Kimball Road in Red Bluff. For more informa- tiom call 527-5083. Cowboy Sunday Easter is…what again? It is the day we celebrate the reality that a man who was God came into the world and gave His life in exchange for ours, only to reclaim it as the first fruits of our promised resurrection. We claim – and rightfully so – that the certainty of Easter Sunday softens the sting of Good Friday’s passing. But we need to be just as clear that there is no Easter Sunday without that fatal sting of a Good Friday spent agonizingly hung from the crossed beams of a wooden instrument of extreme torture. It is an instrument that both symbolizes and delivers the sickness unto death for all time. The Orland Evangelical Free Church is inviting the community to another Cowboy Sunday family outing. Cowboy Sunday 2011 will be held Sunday, May 1. It will include a junior rodeo for the kids, horseback rides and a farm animal petting zoo. During the rodeo there will be an acoustic jam on the lawn with bluegrass and old-time music; so bring your chairs, instruments, and join in. The day will begin at noon with a tri-tip barbeque being served from noon to 1:30 p.m. At 1:30 p.m. Cow- boy Church features the Wintons, a family gospel blue- grass band who will be putting on an energetic blue- grass concert featuring both gospel and secular songs. A message will be given by Randy Winton during the concert. There is no cost to attend any of the Cowboy Sunday events. The optional tri-tip lunch is $5 per person and kids under 6 years old eat for free. Cowboy Sunday will be held at the Verboom Ranch, 6058 Co. Rd. 11, Orland, CA 95963 Please come! Bring the family, invite your friends, and enjoy a great afternoon of fun and getting to know each other. To learn more about the Winton’s, visit www.thewintonsbluegrass.com or call åGrant Garland 301-6140. Orland Evangelical Free Church was founded more than 90 years ago. The church is called "evangelical" because it preaches the gospel of Jesus Christ and believes the Bible is the Word of God. The church is called free because the original fathers of the move- ment, immigrants from Scandinavian countries, sought to distinguish their churches from the state churches in their former homelands. Charles Colson writes tellingly in his account of his own conversion to Christ that he believed he understood the workings of power from within his office at the Nixon White House. He thought he knew all about victory and winning – in the Vince Lombardi sense of the word – until he was forced to lie down in the abysmal emptiness of utter defeat. Only then, Colson says, in the absolute poverty of com- plete defeat – measured by the bounds of his prison cell – did he come to understand real power. It was not the power of the prison – he had under- stood that before because he had power to send others to prison. It was the power that transcended prison, that is perfected only in weakness and sub- mission, that he came to understand in his prison cell. In that cell he met the Lord who stood by Paul and Silas in a Berean prison cell when the doors were blasted open by an angel gener- ated earthquake. He embraced that First Baptist Church of Red Bluff is still looking for photos, information or memora- bilia concerning the his- tory of the church to be put on display during the 150 year celebra- tion. The celebration is scheduled for 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 4. If you have any clip- pings or pictures, espe- cially those dealing with ministry or if you were married, baptized or had a funeral or social event in the church, please send copies to 501 Pine Easter is... Lord in the power that led Paul and Silas to remain where they were when they could so easily have escaped, the power that says it desires the death of no one. The Holy Spirit who wields that power says, "I can release you at any time; why don’t you stick around and see if you might be privileged to baptize the jailer and his family out of their despair." I remember well the first time I challenged Him to speak if He cared about me; and how passionately I came to care about Him when He did just that. I remember just as well is no Easter without the sacrifice of the Cross accompanied by our poverty- stricken participation in it. James the first time I saw Mel Gib- son’s production of The Pas- sion of the Christ. I was part of a focus group that met in Los Angeles and was permit- ted to view a rough cut of the film. The scene depicting Jesus’ scourging went on and on – it was shortened for the theatrical release – and I reached a point of saturation in that pain in which I spoke to the Lord and said I could not watch any more and I was planning to shut my eyes until it was over. He answered me in the clarity of His own holiness, "He had to do it; all I ask of you is that you watch." He is still asking us to watch with Him one hour. We are spared the pain that we have earned by His consent to be the sacrifice. But He does expect us to be consenting witnesses; moreover, He expects us to bear witness to what we have consented to see. Truly there Wilson GodTalk But it is just as true that there is no meaning to the sacrifice of the Cross without the com- ing of Easter Sunday. Without the resurrection we celebrate tomorrow the death of the Son of God is nothing more than an incredibly heroic death. He dies in innocence, but peo- ple die that way every day. He dies a willing sacrifice for others, but so does every firefighter, soldier and police officer – and every parent – who stands between the people he serves and the death that seeks them; numbers are irrelevant because it is the decision to die that we honor. Yet God, in His mercy, says He will not permit the sacrifice to stand uncompleted. To sacrifice is to make holy, and it is the life God gives that is holy; He is the God of the living and not of the dead. This one time He says He will not permit death to be perma- nent. And because He speaks death can never again be all there is to the end of life. Because He dies and comes again to live amongst us we can say, "Death, where is thy sting?" We can heal and baptize the jailer and his family while we are at it. James A.Wilson leads the regional PrayNorthState ministry.
