ΣΦΕ spring 2014 ed doo R R AlAbAmA betA s the UniveRsity of AlAbAmA sigmA Phi ePsilon the Alabama beta AvC Works to enhance Chapter dynamics T he Balanced Man Program at the University of Alabama has created SigEp leaders on campus and throughout the community. The recent news of our next door neighbors being classified as the Deadliest Fraternity (ΣAΕ) in Barron's and www.al.com articles gives credence that we have made the right decisions. Our neighbors will be replicating our programs with a similar program called The True Gentleman Experience. Undergraduate Chapter Finishes First in Academics Last semester our undergraduate Chapter was nearly 90 members strong. These men obtained a 3.47 GPA, with 19 brothers earning a 4.0 GPA for the semester. This placed us first among all fraternities on campus. Congratulations to Will Menas '15 for being a finalist for the Tragos Quest to Greece. While Will was not selected to the final group, being a finalist is an honor and he should be commended for his work. new Mentoring Committee Established In January 2014, the Chapter implemented a new mentoring program. We have alumni brothers as well as graduate school students, who work on achieving master's degrees in counseling and are members of our mentoring committee. The committee will work regularly with our undergraduate chapter officers to deal with day- to-day issues and support. The undergraduate officers continue to report to the AVC board. However, with most AVC members not living in Tuscaloosa, this gives us the opportunity to support our undergraduates more effectively. Alabama Beta Embraces Balanced Man program A key component of the Balanced Man Program (BMP) is mentoring. When the BMP was introduced 20 years ago, it redefined the experience college men expect from their fraternity. Today, this interactive program can help brothers at every stage of their college years to develop and better prepare for the transition to life after college. Through a series of four challenges, brothers become progressively more prepared to transition out of college at one of the most transformative times in their lives. • The Sigma Challenge focuses on understanding the Fraternity's history, principles, and values. • In the Phi Challenge, men focus on understanding themselves, their choices, and ways to achieve balance. • The Epsilon Challenge focuses on leadership and community involvement. • The Brother Mentor Challenge entrusts brothers with guiding new brothers, prepares them for their transition out of college, and examines how their SigEp experience can continue to help them be successful. stay Connected The undergraduate Chapter is developing a new web page. We will communicate this on the Facebook page (Sigma Phi Epsilon Alabama Beta Alumni) once it is up and running. Please make sure we have your current contact information. If you are not receiving e-mails or mailings, please send an e-mail to jjudge4th@gmail.com to update your records. We are planning for the next annual board meeting. If you are interested in being an officer of the AVC, please forward your name to steve Mace '71 at stjmace@charter.net. We will communicate the date for the meeting soon. We hope to see everyone there. Great strides were made toward completing our chartering petition, which was submitted to the national board of directors in April. Our achievements are due largely to the quality of our members, as well as substantial growth of the Chapter. Welcome, New Members This spring we welcomed nine new members into the Chapter. The concerted efforts of Vice President Recruitment Trevor pinchback '16 and our recruitment committee helped us bring in one of the largest spring classes on campus and our total membership to 91. These nine have already started to find their Alabama Beta's intramural basketball team went undefeated in the regular season and lost in the third round of the playoffs. (Continued on page 2)
