more relaxed." And then came the mellow
"Buddha baby."
What's her biggest challenge as a devoted
mom who's also passionate about her work?
"The hardest part is that pull of wanting to
be with your kids but also having to make
a living. I have a wonderful nanny, and that
helps me feel safe. But the pressures we put
on ourselves as working mothers are really
hard. Your husband needs you and your kids
need you and you're just exhausted. There's
a tremendous sense of overwhelm. I can't
imagine what it would be like to be a single
mom because it's hard enough as it is."
Given her husband's position as California's
Lieutenant Governor, he clearly has many ob-
ligations and appearances that often pull him
far from home. Newsom too finds herself with
less time to support her husband these days.
"I used to do everything when I was First Lady
of San Francisco. Lately I've done less and
less." But of course she knows that will change
again as her children grow up and become
more independent in the years ahead.
Where does Jennifer Siebel Newsom see
herself in ten years when she's on the brink
of age 50? "I'm on this creative journey. We're
building this movement. I'm becoming more
accomplished as a public speaker and an ad-
vocate. I may be more
involved politically.
A lot of it depends
on what my husband
does."
She plans to be
working harder than
ever. "It takes time to
change culture and
we're in the culture
changing business.
But I'm hoping to
be smarter about
my work/family bal-
ance and not run
myself so ragged."
Newsom also
has big plans for
the Represen-
tation Project. "We're going to
continue to grow and to see real systemic
change."
On particularly hectic days, Newsom
draws strength from the positive reactions
people have to "Miss Representation" and
her other projects.
"I love that. That keeps me going – the
fact that we're having an impact. It's very
exciting for me to see where we can go in
partnership with other organizations. That's
what gets me out of bed in the morning." ■
