They landscaped the area with deer-resistant plants such as New Zealand flax, grasses, salvia, succu- lents and California poppies. And, just when she had settled into her peaceful new home, life threw her a surprise. She met the man who would become her hus- band and they married in her garden four years ago. "Now that he has moved in and his three beautiful teenagers stay with us part time, I feel lucky all over again." The house, which she had designed just for herself, has adapted beautifully to its new role. A rarely used breakfast room was converted to a bedroom for her stepson and the former master bedroom upstairs is divided, through the use of closets, into separate bedrooms for the two girls. Her husband's framed photographs of peo- ple he met on his travels blends easily with the art pieces she likes to collect such as an angel sculpture in the foyer by Philip Glasshoff and an oil painting by her friend and favorite artist, Leslie Allen. Perhaps it's only fitting as Aiken considers the home her own "grown-up art project." ■ The bedroom is an open plan master suite with a gas fireplace and unenclosed concrete bathroom. Lucca, Italy.
