S P R I N G 2 0 1 4 | NORTH BAY WOMAN 17 "It's an uncompetitive environment," says studio owner Anne-Marie McMahan, "one that is so welcoming." This camaraderie is one of the cornerstones of the Dailey Method, developed in 2001 by Bay Area entrepreneur Janet Dailey McIntosh and now available in the U.S., Canada, Mexi- co and Europe. Like the Bar Method, the Dailey Method traces back to the program developed by Lotte Berk. Dailey, already an experienced Pilates instructor when she discovered Berk, took aspects of each, added her own inspired movements based on her dance and kinesiology background, and developed a way to "help guide people beyond exercise so that it transferred throughout their day." How? "Dailey is all alignment-based," McMahan explains. This emphasis on structural alignment makes the Dailey Method ideal exercise for anyone recovering from injury or modifying movement due to physical limitations. The routines challenge each person individually, so they're effective for all ages and levels. Dailey instructors are hands-on in helping students learn the movements, so the method is excellent for those new to exercise or creeping back after a hiatus. What's more, participants sport an array of body shapes and sizes, from fit and thin to pregnant to post-menopausal to overweight. This is the most welcome you will ever feel at an exercise class. And perhaps the most refreshed. Recommended for: Beginners to advanced exercisers who want a body- transforming regime that strengthens, length- ens and re-energizes in a supportive, community atmosphere. ■ "...structural alignment make The Dailey Method ideal exercise for anyone recovering from injury." – Dailey Method's Novato studio owner Anne-Marie McMahan Shown above is The Bar Method Round Back position which tapers the upper legs, increases hamstring flexibility and therapeutically stretches tight muscles in the back.
