16 NORTH BAY WOMAN | S P R I N G 2 0 1 4 physical therapy until her classes no longer resembled the Berk method and she branched out on her own. There are now 75 locations across the U.S. and Canada. Like Pure Barre, the Bar Method targets muscle changes without stress on the joints. Unlike Pure Barre, which incorporates formal dance moves into isometric routines for an energetic workout, the Bar Method focuses more on form than intensity. Even so, caution is advised for those with injuries or medical condi- tions, and the Bar Method studio requires a doctor's permission for pregnant women wishing to take classes. The exercise routines sound simple: Eight or nine muscle-strengthening exercises sandwiched between stretches, a combi- nation that the Bar Method says reshapes and elongates muscles "to give a long, lean dancer's body." One look at Leonard proves the method's effectiveness. After 33 years of training, she is lithe, lean and posture-perfect at 67. Recommended for: Healthy exercisers who have good coordination, want a balance of strength and flexibility, and are serious about working out. THE DAILEY METHOD The spirit of the Dailey Method's Novato studio can be summed up in one word: Community. Pure Barre technique is designed to keep the body safe while being able to tone muscles to create long, lean physiques. Movement shown above targets the outer seat and hip.
