Dragon Speak Page 4 1965 and 1966 Brothers reunite at road america race J ames King '66 and Howard Cherry '65 hosted a Beta Gathering at Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, July 17-21 for The Road America Race. The track is the premier road racing track in the United States, being four miles long with 17 turns and multiple elevation changes. James and Howard raced their historic Formula One cars in a class with 34 cars competing. The cars they own are original 1970's era Formula One cars that were driven by the legends of the sport i.e. Andretti, Hunt, Lauda, Fittipaldi, Sullivan, Rahal and the like. The cars must be raced as they were originally presented including period correct engines, tires, and graphics giving the class wide international appeal. James and Howard have raced these cars in many international venues, including Monaco, Monza, Pau, Silverstone, and Goodwood in Europe as well as all of the major road racing tracks in the U.S. and Canada. Our brothers earned a podium finish with James coming first and Howard finishing third. Our Beta brothers were of great help during the race weekend providing support in many ways. Although the races were the highlight of the long weekend, some of the brothers took advantage of the nearby golf courses, including Whistling Straits. It was a wonderful event in every respect, to include Formula One races, brotherhood, and fantastic weather. All of the participants are members of the Westminster Beta Foundation which was formed in 1998 by Brothers Howard Cherry, Peter Brown '66, Rob Price '65, James King, and Virgil Trotter '66. Other brothers quickly joined the group and have attended one or two meetings annually. The foundation is devoted solely to benefit Alpha Delta actives and to a smaller degree Westminster College. To date nearly $200,000 has been donated and nearly $100,000 dispersed in the form of scholarships, luncheons with high school counselors, and a recent emphasis on assisting actives with expenses of conventions and the various institutes. The last convention was attended by 10 Alpha Delta Betas. Since its inception this foundation has awarded 31 scholarships. If there is an interest in joining the foundation please contact Louis Beasley '65 at beasley. louis33@gmail.com.
