By Allen G. Breed The Associated Press PERTH, AusTRAliA » After a month of failed hunting and finding debris that turned out to be ordinary flotsam, an Australian ship detected faint pings deep in the In - dian Ocean in what an offi- cial called the "most prom- ising lead" yet in the search for Flight 370. Officials coordinating the multinational search for the missing Malaysia Airlines jet still urged caution Mon - day after a weekend that also brought reports of "acoustic noise" picked up by a Chi- nese vessel also trying to solve the aviation mystery. The Boeing 777 vanished March 8 while flying from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 people on board. The focus of the search changed repeatedly since contact was lost with the plane between Malaysia and Vietnam. It began in the South China Sea, then shifted toward the Strait of Malacca to the west, where Malaysian officials eventually confirmed that military radar had de - tected the plane. An analysis of satellite data indicated the plane veered far off course for a still-unknown reason, head - ing to the southern Indian Ocean, where officials say it went down at sea. They later shifted the search area closer to the west coast of Australia. "We are cautiously hope - ful that there will be a posi- tive development in the next few days, if not hours," Ma- laysian Defense Minister His- hammuddin Hussein said in the capital of Kuala Lumpur. The Ocean Shield, an Aus- tralian ship towing sophisti- cated U.S. Navy listening equipment, detected two dis- tinct, long-lasting sounds un- derwater that are consistent with the pings from an air- craft's "black boxes" — the flight data and cockpit voice recorders, Houston said. Navy specialists were ur - gently trying to pick up the signal detected Sunday by the Ocean Shield so they can triangulate its position and go to the next step of send - ing an unmanned miniature submarine into the depths to look for any plane wreckage. mAlAysiA 'Promising lead' emerges in hunt for Flight 370 By Peter leonard The Associated Press DONETsK, uKRAiNE » Pro- Russian activists barri- caded inside a government building in eastern Ukraine proclaimed the region inde- pendent Monday and called for a referendum on seced- ing from Ukraine — an om- inous echo of the events that led to Russia's annexation of Crimea. The Ukrainian govern - ment accused Russia of stirring up the unrest and vowed to quell it. Russia, which has tens of thousands of troops massed along the border, warned Ukraine of more "difficulties and cri - ses" if its leaders fail to heed Moscow's demands. In Washington, the U.S. said any move by Russia into eastern Ukraine would be a "very serious escala - tion" that could bring fur- ther sanctions. White House spokesman Jay Carney said there was strong evidence that some of the pro-Rus- sian protesters in Ukraine were paid and were not lo- cal residents. At the same time, the U.S. announced that Sec- retary of State John Kerry will meet with top diplo- mats from Russia, Ukraine and the European Union in a new push to ease tensions. The meeting, the first such four-way talks since the cri- sis erupted, will take place in the next 10 days, the State Department said. Pro -Russian activ ists who seized the provincial administrative building in the city of Donetsk over the weekend announced the for - mation Monday of the inde- pendent Donetsk People's Republic. They also called for a referendum on the seces- sion of the Donetsk region, which borders Russia, to be held no later than May 11, ac- cording to the Russian news agency Interfax. A similar action was taken in another Russian-speak - ing city in the east, Kharkiv, where pro-Moscow activists declared themselves "alter- native" regional legislators and proclaimed a "sovereign Kharkiv People's Republic," Interfax reported. Russia annexed Crimea last month, following a ref - erendum called just two weeks after the Black Sea peninsula had been over- taken by Russian forces. Ukraine and the West have rejected the vote and the an- nexation as illegal. The Donetsk and Kharkiv regions — and a third Rus- sian-speaking city besieged by pro-Moscow activists over the weekend, Luhansk —have a combined popula - tion of nearly 10 million out of Ukraine's 46 million, and account for the bulk of the country's industrial output.
