The Red Bluff boys swept the sprint races and the Spartans and Lady Spartans both placed second at the prestigious John Frank Invitational, Saturday, hosted by Central Valley. Jeff Foster won the 100 meters in 11.34 seconds. Colin Dahlberg won the 200 meters in 22.52 sec- onds and Zach Iverson grabbed the 400-meter title in 52.13 seconds. Los Molinos took 14th with 14 points. Dahlberg also grabbed the long jump title with a leap of 22’9.25” and Dominic Lightfoot gave Red Bluff a first place victory in the shot put (50’11”). Once again the 4x100 relay team of Foster, Dahlberg, Iverson and Anthony Ragone was edged out by Foothill — this time by a hundredth of a sec- ond — to finish second. SOFTBALL Lassen Tournament The Lady Spartans rounded out a week that had already featured a last out game-tying homer by a freshman and a perfect game with a tournament victory, Saturday, spawned by their captain breaking the Northern Sec- tion’s all-time home run mark. And just for good measure they ran their season record up to 17-3 for good measure. While Emily McEnaney was stuck on 25 homers for a few weeks, it didn’t take her long Saturday to launch her record breaking 26th career homer. McEnaney homered in the first inning against Paradise and the Lady Spartans won a thriller 5-3 over a team they stole a victory from earlier in the week. “It was a really well played game by both teams,” coach J Howell said. Despite dimensions large even by collegiate standards at Lassen College, McEnaney’s blast clearly covered the 250 feet. For comparison, Red Bluff’s home field fences are 201 feet away. Megan McColpin also pitched the first of two strong games on Saturday to lift Red Bluff past Paradise. In the semifinals, the Spartans went up against an Anderson team that had beat them Friday night behind a 17- strikeout performance by Cubs pitcher Cheridan Hawkins. While Hawkins would better that strikeout, by fanning 18 Lady Spartans in the semis, Red Bluff found a way to past her in the sixth inning. It started with Haley Harris fouling off pitch after pitch and eventually blooping a single. McColpin followed with a single to put runners on the corners. Then McEnaney did what no Northern Section player in history has done better — she smacked a homer. Red Bluff held on behind McColpin to take a 3-1 victory. In the championship game against Lassen, the Lady Spartans belted out 20 hits as everyone got in on the act. McEnaney went 4-for-5 with a triple. Harris, McColpin and Tayler Zazueta each had three hits and Bryce Etzler and Courtney Boes had a pair of hits. Etzler also picked up the win on the mound for Red Bluff, who travel to Oroville, today at 3:30 p.m. That’s a lot of medals McInnis placed second in the triple jump (42’.5”). Zak Stroing was third in the discus (135’9”). The Lady Spartans 4x400 relay team of Roxanne Luppino, Jessie Slade, Adrienne Hinkston and Erin Eicholtz took first place with a time of 4:16.30. The 4x100 relay team of Riley Kittle, Luppino, Slade and Hinkston placed third (52.84). Hinkston was second in the 200 meters (27.39) and third in the 400 meters (62.25). Kittle placed second in the high jump (4’8”). Meaggan Rector’s 36’ shot put was good for sec- ond. Katelin Collins placed third in the 100-meter hur- dles (18.10). BASEBALL Corning 2 2 1 Central Valley 3 7 2 Central Valley pushed across the winning run during their last at bat, Friday, to beat Corning 3-2. The Cardinals fell to 3-5 overall and 3-3 in the Northern Athletic League with the loss. Quintin Flores pitched for Corning. Austin Grootveld had a hit and scored a run. Tyler Price had the other Cardinals’ hit and Tyler McIntyre scored the other Corning run. Hamilton 7 Los Molinos 2 Hamilton handed Los Molinos a 7-2 loss Friday. The Bulldogs dropped to 2-2 on the season. Liberty Christian 9 Mercy 7 Mercy belted out three homers and had Liberty Christian tied headed into the sixth inning, but ulti- mately fell 9-7, Monday. Mitchell Lopez, Logan Baer and Wesley Inman all homered for the Warriors. Chris Barlett pitched four-plus innings and allowed two unearned runs as Mercy’s defense once again let them down. Mercy put two runners on in the bottom half of the sixth, but couldn’t push across either. “It’s a big improvement from Friday,” coach Jim Weber said. “We just need to clean up the fielding.” Liberty Christian 24 19 2 Mercy 11 10 7 (FRI) The scoreboard operator had a busy Friday as Liberty Christian beat Mercy 24-11 in a game with 29 hits. Mercy. Christ Bartlett homered and stole two bases for Logan Bear homered and doubled, driving in two runs. Thomas Wilson doubled and drove in a run. ARCHERY Paige Pearce, 16, traveled to the Dominican Republic to compete on the Women’s U.S. Archery Team at the IV Copa Merengue de Tiro con Arco World Ranking Tournament. Twelve countries were represented: Ecuador, El Salvador, Dominican Republic, Chile, Trinidad and Tobago, Uruguay, Argentina, Puerto Rico, Bar- bados, Canada, Guatemala and the United States of America. Pearce competed in both the Senior and Junior (18-20 year-old) division. The five-day tournament commenced on March 15th with a 144 arrow FITA round. Archers shot 36 arrows at 70 meters, 60 meters, 50 meters and 30 meters. The first day consisted of the 144 arrow FITA Round. “It was a long, hot, windy day,” said Paige’s mom, Stacy Pearce. “The food or water had made Paige sick and she was throwing up during the official practice ends. Luckily, one of her teammates practices acupuncture which stopped her from getting sick, so she managed to shoot.” In the United States, medals are only given at the completion of the FITA in the Junior Division and then the adults and juniors both compete in the Olympic Rounds where medals are given again. In other countries, medals are awarded after every distance, the FITA, the Olympic Rounds and the Team Rounds. At the end of the first day, Paige had won all five gold medals in the Junior Division and the No. 1 ranking. In the adult division she won bronze medals in both the 70 and 60-meter ends and gold medals in the 50 and 30- meter ends. She won a gold medal in the FITA and the No. 1 ranking with a score of 1354, teammate Diane Watson took the silver with a 1331, and Yolanda Lagos of El Salvador took the bronze with a 1327. The ranking round deter- mines the brackets for both the elimi- nation rounds (Olympic Rounds) and the team rounds. With teammate Kendal Nicely finishing fourth with a 1324, team USA was ranked No. 1 going into the elimination rounds. Day 2 consisted of the Senior Olympic Rounds where archers shoot head to head matches. Each archer shoots 3 arrows at 70 meters. The archer with the highest score gets two points and the archer with the lower score gets no points. In a tie, each archer gets a point. The first archer to six points wins the match. Ranked No. 1, Pearce had a bye for her first match. Her second match against Valeria Aguirre of El Salvador ended in victory with a score of 6-4.
