6B – Daily News – Tuesday, April 12, 2011 Boehner and Obama have built a good working relationship WASHINGTON (MCT) — House Speaker John Boehner said Monday that the recent bud- get battle has forged a good working relationship with Presi- dent Barack Obama, one that will be tested as bigger fights loom between the two leaders. In his first interview since Fri- day's 11th-hour compromise on the 2011 budget, the Ohio Republican said his party will push hard for a "meaningful" deficit reduction plan before agreeing to increase the nation's debt limit. "Not raising the debt limit would have serious, very serious implications for the worldwide economy and jobs here in Amer- ica. But having said that, we're just not going to do the typical Washington thing — roll over, increase the debt limit — without addressing the underlying prob- lems," he told Fox News Chan- nel on Monday. Lawmakers have not voted on the final compromise reached Friday between House Republi- cans, Senate Democrats and the White House — the first vote is expected to come Wednesday in the House. But Washington is already eyeing the next in a series of fiscal confrontations that will come as Congress takes up the administration's request to increase the limit on federal bor- rowing. That vote will likely not come until May. But Republicans will showcase the more than $14 tril- lion debt in rolling out an auster- ity package from House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, R-Wis., later this week. Obama is also planning his own address on deficit reduction on Wednesday as he seeks to reframe the narra- tive pushed by the GOP that he has "punted" on a serious approach. Boehner said he looks for- ward to hearing the president's ideas, but that he's already cool to the suggestion of raising taxes on higher earners. "We've been waiting for months for the president to enter into this debate with us. And I can tell you that privately I've encouraged the president: 'Mr. President, lock arms with me. Let's jump out of the boat togeth- er,'" Boehner said. "We have to deal with this, this is the moment in time that we've been given to address the problems. Forget the next election. Forget the next poll that's going to come out. It's time to do the right thing for the coun- try." Looking back on the deal reached Friday, Boehner said it was by no means perfect, and even predicted members of his caucus are likely to vote against it. But he sold it as a "good start," saying the government will now spend $78 billion less than would have been the case if Democrats had their way. And he credited the "tea party" movement for dri- ving that progress. "While the president and oth- ers want to malign the tea party, these are Americans who've got- ten engaged in the government, many for the first time," he said. "I think we ought to welcome their involvement, welcome their energy, and we should listen to them." The battle of the last month produced its share of heated moments. Boehner criticized the "feigned moral outrage" Vice President Joe Biden showed at one point. But the speaker and the president have built a solid working relationship, Boehner said. "I think we've understood more about each other. I think we've developed a process that may allow the debate to go for- ward," he said. "But understand that ideologically there are giant differences." Retired Gen. McChrystal to advise first lady's campaign to aid military families WASHINGTON (MCT) — Retired Gen. Stanley McChrys- tal, who was relieved of com- mand in Afghanistan last year, will advise a new national cam- paign led by first lady Michelle Obama to help the nation's troops and their families, a White House official said. President Barack Obama relieved McChrystal of com- mand last June after Rolling Stone magazine quoted his aides as making unflattering com- ments about top civilian leaders, including the president and Vice President Joe Biden. "War is bigger than any one man or woman, whether a pri- vate, a general or a president," Obama said then. He tapped Gen. David Petraeus to succeed McChrystal, who had led more than 150,000 troops from the U.S. and 45 allied countries. Now McChrystal has been selected as an unpaid adviser to "Joining Forces," an effort the first lady, with Jill Biden, the vice president's wife, will unveil Tues- day at the White House. The effort aims to enlist all sectors of society in ensuring "military families have the sup- port they have earned," the first lady's office said. The campaign's other unpaid adviser will be Patti Shinseki, wife of Eric Shinseki, the retired general and former Army chief of staff who is secretary of the Veterans Affairs Department. McChrystal and Shinseki will serve as advisers at the nonparti- san Center for a New American Security, a Washington think tank that is the lead nonprofit partner to Michelle Obama's effort, said Nathaniel Fick, the center's CEO. Talking about McChrystal, Fick, a former Marine infantry captain, said: "Since he left uni- form, he's been in the public eye talking about service and leader- ship and how a very small frac- tion of American society is fight- ing these wars, so from the White House perspective, and ours, he was a good addition to the team. His name was well-received by the White House." The Joining Forces campaign aims to involve individuals, com- munities, businesses, nonprofits, faith-based groups, charities and the government in a large-scale effort to help troops and their families. After Tuesday's White House presentation, Michelle Obama and Jill Biden will hit the road on a two-day tour to visit installations and meet with mili- tary families, aides to the first lady said. Their effort will feature plenty of star power, not just courtesy of retired military brass. Joining them at stops on their road trip will be Martha Stewart, Jessica Simpson, Nick Jonas and Sesame Street characters. On Wednesday, Michelle Obama and Jill Biden will visit Camp Lejuene in North Carolina, joined by Marine Corps Com- mandant James Amos, and will make remarks before attending a baby shower for 40 pregnant mil- itary spouses. Later Wednesday they will visit Brooke Army Medical Center in Texas. On Thursday, they will visit Denver and Colorado Springs, Colo., and Columbus, Ohio. In January, President Barack Obama announced he wanted to enlist the full force of the federal government to aid the families of the country's more than 2.2 mil- lion service members. He emphasized four areas: the mental and physical health of military families; the education of their children; the educational and career opportunities afforded spouses; and the availability and quality of child care within the armed services. Fick, at the Center for a New American Security, said the first lady's effort would aim to enlist the private sector because "veter- ans don't come home to govern- ment agencies, they come home to communities," he said. "So the missing piece in veterans' and military family policy is mobiliz- ing the resources, expertise and good will of American commu- nities." McChrystal is chairman of a consulting firm, McChrystal Group, is a senior fellow at Yale University and sits on the boards of Navistar International Corpo- ration and JetBlue and a charity for injured service members, the Yellow Ribbon Fund.
