THE CAL SIG ALPHA BETA CHAPTER OF SIGMA CHI FRATERNITY Spring 2014 AlphA BetA ChApter house renovAtions Continue More Upgrades and Alumni Events Planned G reetings from the Alpha Beta Chapter of Sigma Chi. It's been an exciting time in Berkeley. Spring recruitment was successful with 13 new pledges learning about our fraternity's long history and customs. They're an interesting group—all top students and eager to become active members who will be assets to the chapter. HOUSE UPDATES RESUME • The painting of the house exterior turned out very well. Roofing work was completed in advance of the large storms that came through at the end of February, and we no longer need to call the room on the second floor "the rainforest." • A wrought-iron fence and two gates were installed to completely enclose the back yard area from the barbecue to the parking lot. This has enhanced house security and will make it easier to monitor admission to functions from a risk management standpoint. • With so many members using bicycles to commute to class, a storage problem has developed, so we're constructing a secure bike shelter at the northeast edge of the basketball court. • This summer we will completely remodel the kitchen and laundry room, as well as several bedrooms. Designs are being finalized, construction bids are being considered, and the work will begin as soon as the school year ends. An upgrade to the electrical panel will allow us to install hand dryers in all bathrooms, cutting down on paper waste. SUMMER ALUMNI EVENT PLANNED Many alumni events are planned this year. One of the most fun involves a group of '70s-era alumni who have an annual night at a Giants game. This event has been going on since the 1980s. Originally hosted at Candlestick Park, brothers braved wind and cold to reunite and enjoy a great evening at "The Stick." Since the construction of the new stadium, the brothers rendezvous at the 21st Amendment restaurant and enjoy pre-game food and beverages before walking to the game. Brother Tito Rael '76 has planned and organized for all of these years and we are grateful for his efforts. This year's event is on Monday, August 25, at 7:15 p.m., when the Giants play the Colorado Rockies. COME OUT FOR THE BIG GAME LUNCHEON THIS FALL The premier alumni event of the year is the Big Game Luncheon. Held every year on the Friday before the big game, our brothers enjoy a great lunch at Schroeder's Restaurant in San Francisco. As if the camaraderie, great food, steins of German beer, and best tie contests aren't enough fun, a contingent of our Cal Marching Band takes center stage inside the restaurant and plays several songs as a special treat. By the time our brothers finish singing along with the band, there's not a Stanford fan in sight. This event has been planned and organized every year by Brother Steve Rocha '78. Assisting Steve is a great committee consisting of Vince Rocha '79, Ed Glover '79, and Charlie Wingard '80. Please mark November 21, 2014, on your calendar and plan to attend this special event. You will not regret it. On a sad note, I must inform you that Brother Ernest Putnam "Put" Clark '39 entered Chapter Eternal on November 26, 2013. Brother Clark provided a composite picture of the brothers circa 1937 just prior to his passing. This framed picture will be proudly displayed at the chapter house to be viewed on your next visit to Berkeley. His last words to us at the Alpha Beta Housing Corporation were, "Keep the termites out!" In his memory, we will strive to do just that! Go, Bears! That initial meeting set in motion a three-year trajectory that would lead to him becoming a successful businessman and CEO of his own company. Jake held many leadership positions in Sigma Chi: magister, social chairman, and philanthropy chairman, to name a few. He served as social and philanthropy chairman in the same semester, which gave him a shared budget to put on events for a cause. "That was the first time I saw the power of combining social and impact." He and seven co-founders came together in 2007 to create ONEHOPE Wine, with the goal of selling a quality wine that would enable the company to donate to worthy causes year round. ONEHOPE is now one of the 300 largest wineries in (Continued on page 2)
