6B – Daily News – Monday, April 11, 2011 WORLD BRIEFING UN, French forces in Ivory Coast fire rockets ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast (AP) — United Nations and French helicopters fired rockets on strong- man Laurent Gbagbo’s residence on Sunday in an assault the U.N. said was to retaliate for attacks by his forces on U.N. head- quarters and civilians. U.N. Secretary-Gener- al Ban Ki-moon said he had authorized the strikes, accusing Gbagbo of using heavy weapons against Ivory Coast civilians and the U.N. forces trying to protect them. Residents from nearby neighborhoods reported seeing two U.N. Mi-24 attack helicopters and a French helicopter open fire on the residence, where Gbagbo is holed up in a bunker. The residents couldn’t be named for fear of reprisal. An Associated Press reporter saw the heli- copters take off from the French military base fol- lowed minutes later by explosions coming from the direction of the resi- dence. Successive waves of French helicopters took off from the base in the following hours and addi- tional bombardments could be heard. Gbagbo has been living in a bunker in his resi- dence in Abidjan for near- ly a week. After a decade in power, he refuses to step aside even though the United Nations has ruled that he lost the November presidential election to Alassane Ouattara. Obama to lay out deficit- reduction plan WASHINGTON (AP) — One budget deal down, President Barack Obama and Congress began to pivot Sunday from the painful standoff over this year’s spending to a pair of defin- ing debates over the nation’s borrowing limit and the election-year budget. Much will be revealed at midweek, when the House and Senate are expected to vote on a budget for the remainder of this fiscal year and Obama reveals his plan to reduce the deficit, in part by scaling back programs for seniors and the poor. Across the dial on Sunday, messengers from both par- ties framed the series of spending fights as debates over cuts — a thematic vic- tory for House Republicans Presidential adviser David Plouffe said Obama has long been committed to finding ways for the nation to spend within its means. He confirmed that the president would unveil more specifics for deficit reduction with a speech Wednesday that would reveal plans to reduce the government’s chief health programs for seniors and the poor. Mubarak denies abuse CAIRO (AP) — In the swept to power by a pop- ulist mandate for smaller, more austere government. ‘‘We’ve had to bring this president kicking and screaming to the table to cut spending,’’ said House Majority Leader Eric Can- tor, R-Va., on ‘‘Fox News Sunday.’’ first remarks since his ouster, former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak denied allegations that he used his position to amass wealth and property in a speech broadcast Sunday, as hundreds of protesters occupying the heart of Cairo shouted for him to be brought to trial. Mubarak, forced out of office two months ago by a popular uprising, said he was willing to cooper- ate in any investigation to prove that he did not own property abroad or pos- sessed foreign bank accounts.
