Italian and American re - searchers made the discov- ery using Cassini, a NASA- European spacecraft still ex- ploring Saturn and its rings 17 years after its launch from Cape Canaveral. Their find- ings were announced Thurs- day. This new ocean of liquid water — as big as or even bigger than North Amer - ica's Lake Superior — is centered at the south pole of Enceladus and could en- compass much if not most of the moon. Enceladus (ehn- SEHL'-uh-duhs) is about 310 miles across. The data do not show if the ocean extends to the north pole, said the lead researcher, Luciano Iess of Sapienza University of Rome. At the very least, it's a regional sea some 25 miles deep under miles-thick ice. On Earth, it would stretch from our South Pole up to New Zealand — at the very least. Cassini's rudimentary in - struments also cannot de- termine whether the moon's ocean harbors any form of life. Another mission using more sophisticated instru - ments is needed to make that search. This latest discover y makes the interior of Ence - ladus "a very attractive po- tential place to look for life," said Cornell Univer- sity planetary scientist Jon- athan Lunine, who took part in the study. Back in 2005, Cassini de- tected a plume streaming from cracks in the south po- lar region. Scientists sus- pected these jets of salty water vapor and ice — con- taining some light organic molecules like methane — might come from a subsur- face ocean. On Thursday, they con- firmed its presence. Their findings appear in the jour- nal Science. Cassini provided gravity measurements from three close fly-bys of Enceladus from 2010 to 2012. The Dop - pler data indicated a dense material beneath the surface of the south pole, most likely liquid water. A United Launch Alli- ance Atlas V rocket carry- ing the 19th Defense Meteo- rological Satellite Program spacecraft blasted off at 7:46 a.m. PDT and quickly rose into the cold, clear sky above the launch site on the Pacific coast about 130 miles north - west of Los Angeles. About 18 minutes later, the satellite successfully separated from the upper- stage rocket. The satellite will circle the Earth in a polar orbit at an al - titude of about 525 miles. The satellite, with two primary sensors provided by Northrop Grumman, was built by Lockheed Martin. The company said signals from the satellite were con - firmed shortly after launch.
