April showers bring… I’d be willing to bet that a large percent of readers added to the head line preceding this column topic. It is true that April showers bring May flowers. Stores are stocking the nursery addition with beautiful flowers enticing many of us to pur- chase some for immediate planting in the garden. April showers can bring the most variety of wonderful things. One such exciting event was presented this week on the front page of the Red Bluff Daily News it was titled, "Lifetime lessons." The article honored Nancy Casey regarding her 37 years of teaching preschool chil- dren. Nancy and I began working together in my First Church of God preschool class 37 years ago. We had become friends previously while we were going to college. We have continued that friendship 40 plus years. We have added a few years to our lives and our desire to guide young children through their preschool years and beyond are still our primary goals. Nancy and I were privileged to be on the committee led by Don Corrie who led the first committee to develop Preschool Standards for Tehama County. There were two committee members from public schools and the two of us from pri- vate schools. As a result of Don’s guidance we developed learning standards and applied them to our curriculum. Other counties began to become aware of the project and implemented them to their own preschool development. As a cooperative result for schools of Cal- ifornia’s counties now have content standards for California Schools, grades Preschool through High School. A visit to the Tehama County Department of Education display of the Content Standards booklets which are available for parents to make them aware of the content and how they can guide their children in learning. The Parent Resource Book is designed to improve student performance through communication and part- nership. The content standards for Cali- fornia Schools has been adapted and prepared by Tehama County Department of Education and the Eighteen School Districts of Tehama County, California. The book is available to Tehama Coun- ty Parents whose children are in enrolled in either public or private schools. Nancy and I have shared the well being and learning growth of preschool children for a good number of years. One indicator of long time teaching is apparent when we began to teach the chil- dren of parents whom we had also taught. Thank you Tang Lor for the fantastic picture and article honoring Nancy Casey, many Tehama Coun- ty families have benefited from her loving, caring impact throughout years. Her touch has been felt in both private and public Tehama County schools. In honor of my chosen, Carolyn Barber sister, Nancy I dedicate the following excerpts from "The Hand That Rocks The Cradle Is The Hand That Rules The World." …Woman, how divine your mission, Here upon our natal sod! Keep, oh, keep the young heart open…Always to the breath of God! All true trophies of the ages Are from Mother (Teacher)-love impearled: For the hand that rocks the cradle Is the hand that rules the world. By William Ross Wallace Keep on keeping on Nancy, your influence on children is worth its weight in gold. Carolyn Barber has been writing her column in the Daily News since 1992. It appears on Saturdays. She can be contacted by e-mail at hur- car@yahoo.com.
