Laaser '09 *Fall 2013 donor brett ballou '00 Treasures Sigma Chi Experience g rowing up in Salina, Kansas, with the Payne boys—brett '98, Ryan '00, and eric '02—brett ballou '00 had an instant connection when he decided to attend K-State. "We were all good friends and it felt like the best place for me starting out at Kansas State." The experience was a mixture of learning responsibility, with positions like Derby Days and social chairman, and creating events that would become lifelong memories. "My college and Sigma Chi experience are some of my fondest memories that I still cherish. My favorite memories, then and now, continue to be fall Saturdays at Bill Snyder Family Stadium. I still remember 1998—the highs and the heartbreak. brian brooks '01 and I were roommates that semester and attended every game including all road games, the Big XII Championship in St. Louis, and the bowl game in San Antonio." Brett has learned a great deal in the transition from college life, where he earned a degree in construction science and management, to career, where he is the president and part owner of Schultz Construction in Manhattan. He shares with those just getting started in their careers, "Make sure you love what you choose for a career first. After that, shutup and get to work. Private employers are not in the business of giving hand-outs, so you're going to have to sacrifice and work hard to get where you want to be." Brett has put this advice to work in his own life as he works to lead a company and the teams that rely on him. "My faith and my family are the two most important things in my life. They both have taught me grace, patience, and humility. Being a leader doesn't translate to being in charge. True leadership is serving those around you and trying to make them better people." Living just outside of Manhattan, Brett has the chance to get back to campus frequently for construction projects that his company has done with K-State, but particularly for sporting events. When he catches up with brothers from Sigma Chi, it's typically during football season. Brett and his wife, Liz, have five daughters: Cody (14), Izzy (13), Ellie (10), Addie (10), and Brooklynn (7). "I'd love to meet your families as well, so if you're ever in town for a football game, please look me up to come by our tailgate." Brett can be reached at bballou@schultzconst.com.
