The house is in great condition and we continue on our mission to keep it that way. The Chapter members are doing a good job of respecting the house property. If there are damage issues, the members have stepped forward and taken responsibility. We know with 90 young men living in a house there will be some damage both through accidental occurrence and some deliberate actions. Our main concern is for the Chapter as a whole to respect the property and own up to any damage that the men cause. We have had to address a few maintenance issues. Both of our hot water units failed at the same time, which is rather unusual. It was recognized that the failure was due to water heater faults. Unfortunately, we couldn't have the company replace them as defective because that company was no longer making that product. We were able to work with the installers to get the parts at no cost and just had to pay for installation, which was a big savings. With the subnormal temperatures, our boiler heating system has been taxed and we also had a boiler failure. It was repaired as quickly as possible because the temperature was well below freezing. We have an addition to the Chapter House exterior that will be made as soon as the weather breaks. We have had a difficult time keeping our sign intact. It has often been the target of vandalism and theft. The Chapter members came up with an idea for a new sign. With House Director Cheryl's help, they obtained a design and found someone to make the sign. The sign will be a large piece of limestone. The funds we received from the young men who stole the last sign will contribute to purchasing the new sign. We continue to offer a quality food service to the active brothers in the Chapter House. Campus Cooks provides a variety of food for lunch and dinner. We are the only fraternity on campus that continues to serve a sit-down meal Monday-Thursday. The active Chapter has a food committee that advises Campus Cooks and makes sure the menu offerings are acceptable. Cheryl has been very active in making sure Campus Cooks has placed the right type of chef at Sigma Chi. When you are in Bloomington, I encourage you to stop by the Chapter House. I think you will be amazed at the condition of the house, the active brothers, and the work Cheryl does to keep the Chapter House in good shape. After attending a recruitment event, he was very impressed with the brothers from Lambda Chapter and knew being a member would be a great opportunity. He believes that his membership in Sigma Chi made him a well-rounded and mature person. "Brotherhood helps with life issues, and there are people you can always turn to because of the close bond that you develop with one another," David said. David majored in business with a real estate concentration. "I got a very good education from IU, and it was a wonderful life experience living in the Sigma Chi Chapter House. I developed lifelong friends, who are still my best friends today," David shared. Today, he runs Flaherty & Collins Properties, which he founded with Jerry Collins 21 years ago. They offer expert services in multi-family developments, including development, construction, and management. "There is a real entrepreneurial aspect; every development is different, finances and public involvement fluctuate. There are many moving parts from putting a deal together, in the end you put something together that you can be proud of," David said.
