T h e w r i t e r s a i d , " I am not a reader of the Bible, nor am I a practicing member of a church…How - ever, I am a Christian who believes in the message that God gave us when He sent His Son into the world on Christmas Day. We are to care for the poor, the needy, the less fortunate than we are…" She then attacked a local church she judged de - ficient in carrying out this message. The trouble is, she has no idea what the Gospel is about. She would have to read and believe the Bible to know that. Jesus does set a high pri - ority on caring for the poor. But the Gospel itself is much more personal. The mes- sage is we cannot make it without entering a radically dependent relationship with Him. Once we engage that relationship one of the signs will be caring for the poor. God's Word is just as clear, however, that we can care for the poor apart from Him and achieve only evil; read the temptation narratives in Matthew 4 and Luke 4. Of course, this was a letter to the editor. The attack e- mails I receive are personal. Some would instruct me about prophecy, but I often get correction regarding the "Christian principles of love and tolerance." The writers – who are rarely believers – want to remind me of my re - sponsibilities to these prin- ciples. The trouble is, while love is paramount in the Christian faith, there is no such thing as Christian tol - erance. There are four ways to say "love" in the New Testament alone, but each of them means to embrace the other with compassion and committed relation - ship – treating the other as though he is more important than me. The same princi- ple applies to the radical act of love we call forgiveness. Jesus requires that we ap- proach our brethren seek- ing reconciliation (Matthew 5) before we approach Jesus Himself in worship. He ex- pects us to extend ourselves to the one who holds some- thing against us before we offer gifts to Him – even if the other has no legitimate grievance. Love – by the way – is action leading to warm feelings if practiced consistently; it is not feel - ings that lead to action. Tolerance – toleration – is simply putting up with something or someone we detest and reject out of hand, hoping it does not show too much. We tolerate bad weather, long lines, and dead-end jobs. Christian love crowds out tolerance every time. The crowding occurs because love is real and substantive while toler - ance – applied to human re- lationships – is nothing but hypocrisy masquerading as apathy. The folks chanting tol - erance as though it were a mantra understand this as well as I do. If I own a business – from a bakery to photography – that caters to weddings in Oregon or Col - orado – where, incidentally, gay marriage remains ille- gal – the government will run me out of business if I refuse to serve a gay wed- ding. It is not enough that I make no fuss, that I am tol- erant; I am required to em- brace the people and the concept if I am to do busi- ness without serious pen- alty. If I own Hobby Lobby it is not enough that I toler- ate the legality of elective abortion in the land; the government expects me to supply abortion services to my employees because it ex- pect me to embrace some- thing that spits in the face of my faith convictions. Tol- erance is not enough; only loving embrace will do. But those who insist I love have no clue what love is. As it is depicted in tra - ditional wedding services, love hangs in there through thick and thin with people who may disappoint or even disgust the lover. But like the famous expression of pa - triotic love spoken by Ste- phen Decatur, "Our coun- try…may she always be in the right; but our country, right or wrong," love is any- thing but a blanket endorse- ment of self-destructive be- havior. Jesus loved lepers; He hated leprosy. I love my addicted friends and rel- atives; I hate their addic- tion. I will speak against it whenever I can and tolerate it whenever I must. Some things are sim - ply not tolerable. Gover- nors, attorneys general, and even presidents who won't enforce – or will uni- laterally re-write – the laws entrusted to them are not tolerable; they are to be op- posed. People who bully and terrorize those who do not conform to their ideas are not tolerable; they are to be stopped. Non or marginal Christians who think they know my faith better than I do are to be ignored. Yet Christians are called to love even these – and even as we ignore, oppose or stop them. We're called to love, not tol - erate. James A. Godtalk Christian love crowds out tolerance Ji m Wi ls on The women of the Pres- byterian Church of Red Bluff will be holding a semi- annual rummage sale 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 2, and 9 a.m. to noon Thursday, April 3 at the church, 835 Jefferson St. All merchandise will be new for this sale. Nothing is held over. Proceeds from the sale go toward the women's missionary projects. Fundraiser Rummage sale to support women's missionary projects By rachel Zoll The Associated Press The video, recorded on an iPhone, lasts less than eight minutes. The message is simple: We're brothers de - spite our differences. Yet, religious leaders say this informal greeting from Pope Francis has reset re - lations between the Roman Catholic Church and one of its fiercest competitors around the world, Pentecos - tals. Recorded by a clergy friend Francis had invited to Rome, the message was directed to the spirit-filled Christians whose popular movements have for decades been draining parishioners from the Catholic Church, especially in Latin America. Catholics often compared Pentecostal groups to cults and accused them of overly aggressive, unethical pros - elytizing. The video has gone viral over the last month among Pentecostals and the Cath - olic leaders who work with them. While other popes have sought to build ties with Pentecostals, none be - fore Francis had so broadly or directly reached out in friendship. Pentecostalism, which in - cludes established denomi- nations as well as indepen- dent churches, is considered the world's fastest-grow- ing faith tradition. Among the movement's ranks are charismatics — members of mainstream Christian churches deeply influenced by Pentecostal spirituality, including charismatic Cath - olics, who have had their own struggle for recognition by local bishops and the Vati- can. Together, Pentecostals and charismatics comprise about one-quarter of the world's 2 billion Christians. In the recording, Fran - cis is sitting in a chair, lean- ing toward the camera and speaking without notes, as if in casual conversation with a friend. He compares the di - visions between Catholics and Pentecostals to those of families who live in the same neighborhood who some - times don't get along. He blames sin and "misunder- standings throughout his- tory" on both sides for their rift, and says they should move forward together from now on. "I am speaking to you as a brother. I speak to you in a simple way, with joy and yearning," Francis said. "Let us allow our yearning to grow, because this will propel us to find each other, to embrace one another and together to worship Jesus Christ as the only Lord of history." The recording was made by a clergyman from an ob - scure movement. The visiting friend was Bishop Tony Palmer, an ec- umenical officer for the Com- munion of Evangelical Epis- copal Churches who had met Bergoglio years ago on a mission to Buenos Aires. Palmer said in a phone in- terview that the pope called him in January and invited him to Rome. Pentecostals would have to overcome their own his - toric distrust of the Catho- lic Church and its teachings if they want stronger ties with Rome. On Copeland's Facebook page and other sites with links to the pope's message, comments have been a mix of celebrating the papal ges - ture, and calling the pope a false prophet leading a false church. Copeland's ministry declined to comment to The Associated Press. But after the pope's video was shown, an ecstatic Co - peland led the pastors in an emotional prayer of thanks to the pope, including pray- ing in tongues, and recorded his own iPhone greeting for Palmer to send back to Fran- cis. reliGion With iPhone, Pope Francis starts brand new era with Pentecostals Andrew Medichini — The AssociATed Press Pope Francis blesses the crowd as he leaves at the end of his weekly general audience at the Vatican on wednesday.
