Phi Delta theta Fraternity 5 I t's been an exciting and busy time here at Iowa Gamma! With Homecoming, ISU basketball games, Dance Marathon, intramurals, and elections, there has not been a dull moment. Additionally, we are excited for Greek Week with the women of Pi Beta Phi. ReCRuITMenT ReCoMMendATIonS This year ISU started Greek Visit Day (April 5–6). Potential new members and their families have the opportunity to visit Iowa Gamma during this time. We're accepting recommendations for this spring and summer. If you know any high school seniors who may be interested in becoming Phi Delts, please send us your recommendations. We would love to meet them. ISu BASKeTBAll GAMeS Iowa Gamma brothers have begun the tradition of camping out in the bitter cold for ISU men's basketball games. What began as the brainchild of Greg Hunt 1853 and Alec Wright 1845 quickly snowballed into action for the basketball game against Michigan in mid-November. Greg, Alec, and a handful of brothers hauled out a generator, grill, a huge tent, several mattresses from cold- airs, and even a flat-screen TV to campout for the game, all 37-hours prior to tip-off! Needless to say, they had an absolute blast. The group was interviewed by numerous news and media outlets, and even met Dick Vitale. When game day finally rolled around, all had front-row seats and cheered on Iowa State to an upset over number 7 Michigan! Thanks to Iowa Gamma, camping out has now become common for ISU basketball games. HoMeCoMInG 101 Iowa State's 101st Homecoming took place the first week in November 2013. Phi Delta Theta was paired with the women of Alpha Delta Pi, and we had an extremely successful week. We placed first in Yell Like Hell, second in banner, third in lawn display, and third in painting store front window. We also won second place overall! dAnCe MARATHon Iowa State Dance Marathon has been helping children with life-threatening illnesses for 17 years through financial and emotional support to hundreds of families across Iowa. All of the money raised is given directly to University of Iowa Children's Hospital through Children's Miracle Network. At this event, participants (dancers) stay on their feet for 15 hours to symbolize support for the families who spend countless hours in hospital waiting rooms. But it's not a punishment, it's a party! Participants listen to music, play games, hang out with the kids we help and even do a bit of dancing. Dance Marathon holds a special place in the hearts of Iowa Gamma Phi Delts. The event, Iowa State's largest and most successful student-run philanthropy event on campus, was started 17 years ago by an ISU Phi Delta Theta member. Since its inception, an Iowa Gamma Phi has been in the general co-director role for more than 10 of the marathons. On January 25 Iowa Gamma once again had a great presence in Dance Marathon. The chapter played a large role in the event's success of raising $427,000, with Iowa Gamma raising $11,443.26 alone and becoming one of the top fundraising groups overall! BRoTHeRS AS leAdeRS This year the chapter had 10 active members on executive committees of Dance Marathon. The following were on Recruitment & Morale: Austin Javellana 1818, Ben Carlson 1824, Greg Hunt 1853, nick Hinkle 1850, and Tim Buescher 1854. Jimmy McKenney 2506, Jackson Mores 1838, and Steve McCarville 1846 served on Phi delt Continues Strong Traditions: Camping Out, Homecoming, and Dance Marathon Iowa Gamma front row at the Iowa State vs. Michigan basketball game.
