Whittenberg Country School students took a field trip to Rocklin, near Sacra- mento, on March 21 to visit Parallax, Inc., which man- ufactures computer chips and educational robots. The students, in grades 1-8, were able to tour the fa - cility and hear from a num- ber of Parallax employ- ees, but the highlight of the trip was when the students were able to operate and even program the robots for themselves. The trip to Parallax included a stop at Bidwell Park as the group was heading home. The school has regular field days and field trips throughout the year, in - cluding a multi-day field trip each summer - last year's was to the Mon- terey Bay area, this year's will be a float down the Sac- ramento River and next year's will be to Washing- ton, DC. All of the school's field trips serve educational pur- poses. The school and sev- eral students already had robots from Parallax, but to see behind the scenes was an enriching experi - ence, which tied in with the science unit on electro- magnetism. The culminat- ing activity for the unit will be the WCS Science Fair & Open House, which will take place at Whittenberg Coun - try School 6-8 p.m. today Next year, WCS plans to be a full k-8 program, with three classes.
