Lincoln Street Independent School students traveled recently to Chico State to participate in a hands-on science lab. The 4th through 8th grade students spent an enriching morning doing hands-on science experiments learn- ing about rocks and minerals. In addition to learning the scientific concepts, the students had the opportunity to learn in a college lab environment. Atudents are participating in "flipped learning" where they're gaining back- ground information at home to prepare for their next lab. Lincoln Street School students will return to Chico State to tour the campus and attend a digestive system lab at the end of the month. Keri Safford is featured teacher Gerber SchooL Gerber School would like to recognize Keri Safford as its Feature Teacher. Safford is a natural when it comes to teaching and in - spiring student learning. Her commitment and ded- ication to both the students and Gerber school are unsur- passed. She has embraced the No Excuses philosophy and worked hard to partner with alumni from the Uni- versity of Montana; this fall she even took a group of par- ents and students to Sacra- mento to watch the Sacra- mento and Montana game. Safford goes above and beyond her call of duty ev- ery day. Last summer she took time to create an amazing mural on the library that gets kids thinking about their future while represent - ing our beautiful commu- nity; depicting Mount Las- sen and Shasta. Safford is compassion- ate, dedicated and an ir- replaceable member of the NEU Gerber team. We proudly congratulate Keri as our 2013-2014 Feature Teacher. But Tom Torlakson, the state's superintendent of public education, toured the Central Valley, vowing not to let the drought hurt schools that receive money based on the number of stu - dents in class each day. In a visit this week to Ba- kersfield, Fresno, Firebaugh and Merced — all farming communities at the epicen- ter of California's crisis — Torlakson said he will use his powers under the gover- nor's drought declaration to minimize the financial pain schools feel. Immediate signs of a drought are low reser - voirs, rising wildfire risk and higher food prices, but Torlakson said the drought has a further reach. education California school attendance may drop Contact Kim Berry at 530.529.4074 or www.backtoschoolproject.com Join these community sponsors.
