Thank you. News Sigma E very Monday evening when she drives from her home in De Soto, Kansas, to Lawrence for sorority meetings, Sally Ramseyer Beck '74 still gets excited as she pulls into the parking lot of the chapter house. Memories of Rock Chalk Revue, barn parties, firesides, and late-night donut runs to Joe's fill her mind, along with the special friendships that emerged with so many sisters. "I couldn't wait to join a sorority when I started at KU. I wanted to be a Gamma Phi even before recruitment began since I greatly admired the members I knew from my high school. Being in the sorority was the highlight of my college experience—the friendships, the leadership and service opportunities, and having fun. I have four scrapbooks filled with photos of Gamma Phi memories!" When college ended, Sally's commitment to Gamma Phi continued as she worked for the sorority the following year in California. Attending Gamma Phi leadership trainings and conventions, she soon realized that her involvement was sure to be a lifelong commitment. "After working with so many women from across the country who were volunteering for the sorority, I knew that I always wanted to be involved, no matter where I lived." The opportunities presented themselves when she moved to Ohio with her family, becoming an officer with the area alumnae group and working with the local collegiate chapter. When Sally returned to Kansas 14 years ago, she joined the Sigma Corporation Board and began volunteering as an advisor. Over the years, she has served Sigma as recruitment advisor and scholarship advisor, where she has been instrumental in Sigma Chapter's current achievement of third highest GPA on campus. Nationally, she worked as a member of the Gamma Phi Beta Foundation Board of Trustees for eight years and from 1986 to 1992 as the financial aid chairman for International Gamma Phi Beta, administering the scholarship, fellowship, and grant program. Of all her roles, recruitment advisor stands out to Sally, staying up all night and waiting with excitement to get the lists of new members. "Spending time with all of the collegians keeps me young. Their enthusiasm is contagious!" Sally gives her time and energy to Gamma Phi Beta as no other and has been the backbone of Sigma Chapter at the University of Kansas for many years. Her dedication was recently recognized with the International Gamma Phi Beta Merit Roll award at Founders Day. Outside of Gamma Phi, Sally is an educator, currently a sixth grade special education teacher. She and her husband, Carter, have two daughters, Julie and Katie, and are now enjoying their role as grandparents. Congratulate Sally on her recent accomplishments at slbeck@live.com.
