The district's board of trust - ees last week voted unanimously to hire recruiting firm McPherson & Jacobson, LLC., to hunt for su- perintendent candidates after the board in January terminated its contract with former Superinten- dent Lisa Escobar. Interim Superintendent Joe Harrop said during the meeting Wednesday that he was pleased the board decided to use a search firm. "For one, it widens the search," Harrop said. "The second is that there will be input on the part of all the stakeholders in the school and the district." The council approved a proposal by a group of volunteers to estab - lish the city's first off-leash dog park, to be built at Trainor Park between Frey Field and Vista Pre- paratory Academy. Former Mayor Earl Wintle said dogs are less aggressive and less prone to excessive barking when they receive the socialization they can find at a dog park. Wintle said he has visited a dog park in Redding and reported that city has plans to build two more such parks. Volunteers have agreed to raise all money for construction of fenc - ing and other infrastructure and provide the city with $1,000 an- nually to offset any maintenance costs incurred at the park. Daily News repor ter Rich Greene spoke as part of the volun - teer effort. "Even with a strained budget, you can add a feature to your com- munity," Greene told the council, adding that the park would be the result of combining community re- sources for the betterment of the city. Greene's wife, Laura Greene, said she has visited dog parks in Redding and Chico many times and wanted something more to do in the community without having to leave town. "I have to go all the way to Red - ding and Chico," Laura Greene said. "I would rather spend my money here and stay here than have to go to Redding or Chico." The sound of chirping birds is muffled only occasionally by a truck carrying hay down the ru - ral road. Yet, if all goes according to plan, the valley will be flooded over the next decade and serve as the newest addition to the state's surface water storage system — Sites Reservoir. Wednesday morning, con - gressmen John Garamendi, D- Fairfield, and Doug LaMalfa, R- Richvale, gathered at the edge of the Glenn-Colusa Canal to an - nounce joint legislation to push the Sites Reservoir closer to be- coming reality. The bill calls for federal autho- rization of the project and a push to complete the feasibility study. Already, the Sites Joint Pow- ers Authority (www.sitesjpa.net) has been working to gauge inter- est in the project, including talks with potential investors. An envi- ronmental review is nearly com- plete. At the press conference Wednesday, Representative La- Malfa said he was wearing his dirty cowboy hat because there is "a lot of work to be done." The bill introduced by the two legislators would not help with funding. Money would need to come from state, federal or private in - vestors. If private, that would mean water users who would benefit from having water in storage. In his remarks at the edge of the canal, Garamendi said its unclear how the cost-share would map out. Yet, current eco - nomic losses in California due to drought dwarf the cost of more storage.
