Some of you may remem- ber years ago the popular TV series "Lost In Space." The Robinsons along with two passen - gers and a friendly ro- bot traveled through the galaxy in their search for home while they faced new threats each week. When the robot sensed some dark, mysterious force ap - proaching, he would shout out, "Danger! Danger! Dan- ger!" Ironically, there is today a mysterious force envelop- ing our land and neutering the moral fiber of a nation founded upon the Judeo- Christian ethic. This prevailing force loves to quote, Ad nauseam, the verse, "Judge not lest you be judged" to silence any calls against what for centuries was considered immoral behavior. Case in point, note the number of "famous" people both reli - gious and irreligious who used the verse in response to the comments of Phil Robertson of Duck Dynasty fame regarding sexual mo - rality. One went so far as to state, "Jesus seems to have been notably silent on the issue and, in issues related to illicit sex, the gospels show him suspending judg - ment to a degree vastly un- usual. Even the woman at the well with all those hus- bands." This quote conve- niently left out Jesus' words to the woman, "go and sin no more." This is the same Je - sus who clearly spoke of the need to discern truth from error when speak- ing of false prophets say- ing, "Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep's clothing, but in- wardly they are ferocious wolves. By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thorn bushes, or figs from thistles? Likewise every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them," Matthew 7:15-20. The Jesus of the Bible has often been viewed as a sweet, sentimental DE- masculinized being, rather than the one who spoke of Herod as "a fox" and of the Pharisees as "white- washed sepulchers," and who rebuked His own fol - lower, Peter, with the words, "Get behind m, Sa- tan," which then makes Je- sus out to be "judgmental." It is Jesus who said of Him- self that He was destined to bring a sword of separation into personal relationships. That is, He claims to Him - self ultimate allegiance. He moves the money changers forcibly from His Father's house, and He promises to return in judgment. Our nation has always had within her false proph - ets but never have there been so many within the established church where "Christian funerals" are held and the hope of for - giveness in Christ is left out, where sin is no longer sin and Grace is no longer needed. Even the Pope has stated, "Even an atheist, if he or she does good, has no need for Christ." It is time to put to rest the modern concept of the misjudged verse, "Judge not lest you be judged." Too often we have heard sincere but misinformed Christians and unbelievers alike say, "I don't want to judge anybody, but..." Iron - ically, the one who screams "judge not" is often the one passing judgment on you! This verse is not a warning against judging an action. It is a warning against self- deception and hypocrisy in one's judgment as we see in its context. Simply put, the word "judge" from the original Greek root "krino" could be translated as conclude or condemn, damn or deter - mine. We have no authority to "damn or condemn" any- one; that is God's call. But in the context of Luke 12:57 "Why don't you judge for yourselves what is right?" we are definitely encour - aged to judge in the sense of discernment. Frankly, it goes against the clear teaching of Scrip - ture to declare that we should not judge. But when judgment is made it must be based on God's Word and not on personal opin - ion. Jesus made this clear when He stated, "Do not judge according to appear- ance, but judge with righ- teous judgment," John 7:24. Of course, in the midst of such judgment we are to be aware that we all fall short of God's glory and that having an attitude of damning is forbidden, for there is only One who has the authority to condemn. Ultimately, He is the One who would have all men to be saved, giving His Only Begotten Son that who - ever trusts in Him will not be condemned. In essence, the Cross is that place of judgment where we can meet a just and holy God in peace. Until the day we meet our God, "not judging" false teachers or, in fact, mak - ing excuses for them, or lis- tening to them or not warn- ing others against them, puts us in "Danger! Danger! Danger!" In July 1982 the Rev. Dallas Dubke became Pastor of St. Paul Lutheran Church Red Bluff and Mt. Olive Lutheran Church Corning where he has served for the past 30 years. A Michigan native, his inter - ests include wrestling, Judo, chess, mountain climbing, and biking. He is married with four children. Godtalk There is a judge and He is not me Rev. Dallas Dubke Religion News Service Pope Francis' enormous popularity may not have translated into more parish- ioners in the pews or pen- itents in the confessional, but a new survey indicates it may be persuading Cath- olics to dig deep and give more to the poor — an- other priority for the pon- tiff, who was elected a year ago Thursday. The survey shows that one in four U.S. Catholics say they have increased their charitable giving in the past year, and 77 percent of them say it's because of Francis. "It is clear that Pope Francis and his message of mercy and joy, and a spe - cial concern for the poor, are inspiring U.S. Catho- lics in their giving," said Alexia Kelley, head of Foun- dations and Donors Inter- ested in Catholic Activities, or FADICA, an association that promotes Catholic phi- lanthropy. The survey of just over 1,000 Catholics, conducted March 7-10, was done for FADICA and the U.S. Con - ference of Catholic Bishops Office of National Collections by Zogby Analytics. The sur- vey has a margin of error of 3.2 percentage points. The results also showed that half of those who were inspired to boost their do - nations were motivated by the pope's message of com- passion for the poor, and 44 percent said Francis' exhor- tations to care for others will inspire them to give more to Catholic efforts or organiza- tions in the future. "As FADICA looks to the future, this data suggests that the 'Pope Francis Effect' on Catholic giving will con - tinue to grow, thus bringing the church's critical minis- tries and mercy to those who need it most," said Kelley. A Pew Research Center survey released earlier this month found that American Catholics and the public give Francis high marks as pope — 85 percent and 66 percent favorability ratings, respec - tively — but so far that has not translated into higher rates of Mass attendance, volunteering at church or going to confession. PoPe's first year 'Francis Effect' on Catholic wallets Staff reports A fundraiser will be 12:30 p.m. Sunday to support a missionary trip to Bulgaria. The event will be at Com - munity Baptist Church, 598 Round up Ave. in Red Bluff. A Bulgarian meal will be served consisting of Mousaka and cucumber salad, along with other foods. The trip will take place June 29 through July 8. The missions team is plan - ning to share God's love with orphan children during a five-day summer camp. Bul- garia has the most repressed economy in Europe. Many of these children have been left by parents who could not af - ford to raise them. There will be 30-40 chil- dren at the camp and the team will have interpreters to assist in the activities and the teaching. Each person going on this trip from Red Bluff has to raise $2,500. This fundraiser will help defray costs. There is no charge; however dona - tions to help with the costs are gratefully accepted. Community BaPtist ChurCh Fundraiser to support missionary trip to Bulgaria Religion News Service "Bats in churches are no joke for those who have to clean up the mess behind," said Anne Sloman, chair of the council. "Their pres - ence in large numbers is making it impossible for us to open churches for a whole variety of social and community uses as well as making life miserable for worshippers, and we are seriously worried about the irreparable damage bats are causing to price - less church artifacts." The report prepared by academics at Bristol Univer- sity suggests that with clever use of lighting systems and acoustic devices, bats can be kept away from parts of churches. "The research has been helpful," said Sir Tony Baldry, a member of Par - liament, "but what we now need is action to ensure that church congregations can worship without being con - cerned about the impact of bat feces and urine." Church wardens say that bat droppings can seriously damage your health. Droppings and urine pres - ent a risk of gastrointestinal infection through accidental hand to mouth transfer. The full research of the number of churches involved will be published on the gov - ernment's Department for Environment, Food and Ru- ral Affairs website in two weeks.
