2A – Daily News – Friday, March 25, 2011 Pool turns 75 Community Green flowers people&events By CATHY WILSON Green is a soothing color that represents nature. It signifies growth, renewal, vitality and health. When we think about the color of green in the landscape, we general- ly think about foliage. We don’t often associate this color in terms of flowers. Take note, however, it is a neutral color that blends with anything and adds a relaxing atmosphere to a space. Grown in varying shapes, sizes and hues, green flowers compliment yet enhance the brighter, colorful flow- ers. Courtesy photo McGlynn Pool, pictured here, will celebrate its 75th anniversary this summer. Summer marks the 75th birthday of the McGlynn Pool and with the summer rapidly approaching Blues for the Pool is continually searching for 400club donors. These donations will specifically be used for the opening and operation of the 2011. The Blues for the Pool committee is half way there and has raised $20,000 but another $20,000 is still needed and the committee need your help raising it. All donations are tax-exempt and kept separate from other endeavors. There are two donor options, $100 or $400, and by donating you are providing a pool for children. The pool offers swim lessons, public swim, lap swim, birthday parties and lifeguarding opportunities. For more information on Blues for the Pool, the life guarding class or how you can help open and operate the pool for the summer, call at 529-0556. Any donations would be greatly appreciated. Green flowers placed in a perennial bed with other green blooms, create a balanced yet showy look to the gar- den. They cause you to pause in admiration of their serene beauty. Some examples of green flowers which are readily available can be found in the Echinacea family or more frequently known as the cone- flowers. One is called ‘Green Envy’. The petals are a soft, lime green with a purple flush at the bases. Another is named ‘Green Jewel’ which is a shorter variety with lime flowers on sturdy stems. The blooms have a nodding appear- ance and grow one to two inches in diameter. Hellebores are self seed- ers. For Amaryllis fans there is a Also popular is ‘Merengue’. It boasts of lime green pincushion- type center with coconut downward facing petals. All of these flowers are easy to grow and produce an abundance of flowers. Another "must have" green flower coveted by gardeners as well as floral designers is the calla lily ‘Green Goddess’. The unusual trumpet shaped blooms have creamy white centers which blend into green tapered tips. An added bonus is their wonderful fragrance and they are also easy to grow. Hydrangea paniculata ‘Lime- light’ is one of my favorite shrubs. It’s large, showy blooms open into a lovely lime green and then progress into white when the temperatures reach their peak. In the fall the foliage turns a brilliant red. Hellebore argutifolias is an evergreen shade perennial with pale green blooms that keep their vibrant color all year long including winter. variety known as ‘Evergreen’. The flowers are multiple and are in an exotic chartreuse-green. It definite- ly will stop you in your tracks! ‘Zinnia Envy’ is perfect for all of us that need the flower power that only annuals can provide. The semidouble lime-green blooms grow two inches wide and make ideal fresh cut flowers. They attract butterflies and thrive in full sun and high heat. There could be no better flower for all of us who live here on the valley floor. Festivities will begin at 5 p.m. and a tri-tip dinner at 6 p.m. with an auction and dancing to follow. The goal of the committee is to help Angie with her medical costs and other needs. Angie will be undergoing chemo treatment once every six weeks for the next nine months. She suffered migraines from the anti-nausea medication so the doc- tor is trying other meds both for the migraines and nau- sea. On Feb. 16, she saw the Endocrinologist at UC Davis and was told that the tumor is placing too much pressure on her Hypothalamus and Pituitary causing her to have dangerously low Cortisol levels. She’ll need to take medication twice a day now as Cortisol is what regulates blood pressure. Angie will wear a Medic Alert bracelet, have her blood pressure taken every day and if she ever vomits from the chemo or stomach flu she is to go to the hospital immediately for intravenous Cortisol. As grim as it sounds Angie remains positive and hopes that everyone continues to pray for her. He has ministered in hundreds of churches throughout the United States and helped thousands of individuals and couples get out of debt, learn to man- age their money and accomplish their financial dreams. Every seminar attendee is eligible to sign up for a free, confidential one-hour appointment with Christen- son following the seminar during the week.
