page 2 Beta Tidings Martin Luther said that we are all saints and sin- ners, at the same time. That was certainly true at the Fraternity. There were challenges and the need for God's grace and forgiveness, at mo- ments, but so many joys, as well. Some of the greatest joys include: • All the wonderful students I was able to meet and see grow and learn through their time at Purdue and at the Fraternity. • The help the Fraternity gave to our campus ministry and student leaders at our church, who came from the Fraternity. • Being able to teach and baptize or confirm quite a number of students, through initial contacts at the Fraternity or through Fraternity members. • Amazing alumni, friends, and faculty advisors, who sacrificed much to help the active Chapter through the years (I think of people like Bob Schmidt '39, who helped treasurers, in my early years; John Hingst '46 and sons; and so many others, past and present) • Hearing from alumni, long after they have been gone from Purdue, and seeing the bless- ings God has given them and the blessing they are to others. A great and unique strength of Beta Sigma Psi is its Lutheran base and having committed Chris- tian people willing to help out the alumni board in assisting the active Chapter. Continued sup- port, in terms of volunteers and financial help and prayers, is always needed. Involvement is a way, to meet alumni from different periods of the Fraternity's history, and hopefully, to re- connect with people you may not have seen for a long time. There are great people connected with Beta Chapter, and there are unique bonds built between brothers, and much to be learned from one another. The Purdue campus is becoming more of a mission field, with fewer Lutherans and other Christians, and more with little or no Christian background. With more help and encourage- ment, the Fraternity (and the church) could be a brighter light for what is good and true, in Christ, on campus. As you help others, your own faith can be strengthened, too. Don't forget the impor- tance of your life in Christ, whatever your age! Regarding retirement plans, my wife, Julie, has a long list of things I've neglected for the past 40 years—including more time with her! It is nice to sit in worship with my wife now, too! I have three children, two grandsons, and a third on the way, in Florida. Florida sounds pretty good, after the winter we are having in Indiana, at least, and spending more time with family will be great. Fraternally, Pastor Barton '90 / jpbarton47@gmail.com an Open Letter to Beta Chapter from Pastor Barton '90 (Continued from page 1) thank you, annual Campaign donors, for donating $1,850 Albert F.
