Along with non-believ- ers, they wouldn’t dream of going out the door in the morning without read- ing the newspaper, checking the weather or even reading their horo- scopes. They are dedicated to a daily habit of checking those things. Imagine what would happen if we would com- mit ourselves with equal dedication to reading our Bible before we leave for the day. It would change our lives and impact those around us. We cannot be followers of Jesus without a regular intake of God’s Word! Jesus said that if we continue to obey his teachings we will be his fol- lowers, and the truth of His Word will bring us into the liberty for which we were created. The word "continue" means to live each day by its princi- ple. How can we live each day by a principle that we don’t know? We must read Gods Word. Jesus said, "If you continue to obey my teaching, you are truly my follow- ers. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free." John 8:31-32 The common thread for all great men/women of God in history is that they have or have had great discipline when it comes to spending regular time with the Lord and His Word! Our daily time with the Lord is our repair time. During that time our soul (mind, will & emotions) is repaired by reading the word and spending time in Spirit repair God’s presence. The stress of life wears out our spiritual vitality just like the never ending laundry wears out our washing machine parts. It’s not possible to stop doing laundry. We also can’t stop the stresses of life. Just as a washing machine might need a repair man from time to time, we need spiritual repair, not just from time to time, but every single day. There are many excuses for not reading the Word: We don’t have time; we are not motivated; we don’t under- stand the Bible…but the main reason people don’t spend time with the Lord and His Word is, they are LAZY! Bible study is hard work. It takes time, effort, concentra- tion and persistence. I was raised to spend time with the Lord every day. My parents modeled this to me growing up. But even with great examples it has been a hard habit for me to form. We must truly dig to find all the treasures God has for us in His Word. It takes discipline. 2 Timothy 3:17, out of the Mes- sage says, "Through the Word we are put together and shaped up for the tasks God has for us." We must read the Word in order to be molded and shaped by God. Then we will be ready for all that he has for us each day. 3 stages of Bible study: 1. The Castor Oil Stage – we study the bible because we know it is good SOCIAL CONNECTIONS LIFT SPIRITS The Rev. Duke Tufty, Unity Temple on the Plaza, Kansas City, Mo.: Motivations for attending worship ser- vices are many and quite diverse. When religion adopted the concept of hell, fear became a primary motivation to go to church. Reli- gious leaders used graphic and tortuous imagery such as fire, boiling water and bitter cold to describe hell. The people were warned they would be thrown into a pit full of worms or boiling oil if they didn't attend church and do what the leaders said. One scripture reads, "They will go to hell, and when they come out they will be degraded into a jackal with lean cheeks. People will hate them and throw stones at their black and blue sores." Even though these fabricated stories defy a sound mind and common sense, nevertheless they did motivate many to go to church, just in case. Moving past the superstitions and myths of hell, a more realistic motivation for attending worship services is to become a part of a spiritual community. Human beings are social creatures. What we really want more than anything else are connections. Chaunda Jensen GodTalk for us but not to enjoyable 2. Breakfast Cereal Stage – It is dry and uninteresting but we need the nourishment 3. Dessert Stage – Tastes so good and we enjoy feasting on it Can you find yourself in one of these stages? I have been in the place where I didn’t have a love or passion for the Word. I believed what it said and knew I needed to desire it but I didn’t hunger it like I should. I started asking God for my hunger for the Word to grow and I contin- ued to read and obey its teachings everyday. Set aside time with the Lord every day. Make it as much of a daily habit as drinking your coffee or brushing your teeth. You don’t have to do it on your own, God is faithful and He will meet you during those times. Speak Life: "Lord, give me a passion and a hunger for your Word. Repair my soul – my mind, will and emotions as I dig into the Word. Help me to obey your teachings so the truth will set me free." Chaunda Jensen has partnered with her husband, Larry, to minister in Red Bluff for the past nineteen years as pastor, youth pastor, interim and itinerant support pastor for small churches, and short-term missionary. Voices of Faith: What are motives are for attending services? OBLIGATION, COMMUNITY AMONG REASONS The Rev. Pat Rush, pastor, Visitation Catholic Church, Kansas City, Mo.: At a recent breakfast conversation with a Protestant pastor friend, I learned that his church video- streams its Sunday worship service, and a sizable number of congregants watch it online, either at home or while on vacation. I said that wouldn't work well for Catholics who were not homebound because receiving Eucharist is such an important part of our Sunday worship. Another friend at the table said it wouldn't work for him because he wants to be part of a community when he worships. People's motives for attending worship services are probably as varied as the people themselves. Certainly a sense of obligation and responsibility to worship God in accord with the teachings of their religious community is a prominent motive. But in addition to that, people attend worship services because of the Eucharist, because of the community, because of the music, because of the preaching, because of the presider, because of the venue and environ- ment, to name only a few reasons. People attend worship services because they want to spend time with God, hear God's Word connected to the cir- cumstances of their lives.
