2A – Daily News – Friday, March 18, 2011 Community people&events Goldie’s Dinner A touch of the Blarney in Corning In memory of Goldie Walston and her helpers, the Red Bluff Community Center Auxiliary, Inc., is spon- soring a fundraising dinner Sunday, March 20, at the Center. Serving begins at noon. Tri-tip or chicken breast is offered for $8. Children are half price. Young Marines will be aiding auxiliary members. Although the need for a community center had been recognized for years, a non-binding election in 1982 indicated voters did not want to finance it. Goldie Wal- ston organized a group to raise funds to show commu- nity support so that the city of Red Bluff could apply for a grant. Within six years the group was incorporated and given tax-exempt status, a state grant was given to the county and work began. opened in 1990, and it was dedicated in 1992. The incomplete Center Goldie Walston lived to see its dedication but died the follow- ing year. The Auxiliary paid for tables, chairs, dishes and flat- ware for 360 and many other furnishings. They later financed completion of the covered walkway, which had not been on the original plans, and helped with the parking lot and lighting. Their total contributions are about $117,000, raised through a variety of efforts. After more than 20 years of use, many of the fur- nishings need replacing, and the Auxiliary is anticipat- ing a request to help. The annual dinner and fall craft show are major fundraisers.
