Alpha Artery SIGMA PHI EPSILON 3 SIGMA PHI EPSILON AT OKLAHAOMA STATE UNIVERSITY Dickey Family Sees Need for Housing Changes at SigEp T hings have changed since David Dickey '57, his brother, Jack Dickey '60, and nephew, Steve Dickey '69, were involved in building the current SigEp chapter house. Mostly, "the costs are a lot higher now to build," says David. "The type of home they build today is different than what we were used to, and the men's expectations have changed as well." The need for changes to room configurations and additions of living and study spaces to meet the needs of today's student resonates with the Dickeys, particularly as changes in university and Greek housing increase the level of competition among housing options at OSU. "I'm surprised the undergraduates have done what they've done with the old house," says Steve. "A house isn't everything, but I think it has something to do with the type of men we recruit and will have an impact going forward." David, Jack and Steve all served as chapter president and all went on to law school at OU. David and Steve started their own firm in Oklahoma City, Dickey & Dickey, with the SigEp experience—building skills like getting in front of a group, leading meetings, and dealing with a wide range of people. The parties and friendships added to their SigEp memories and provided a chance to get acquainted with a lot of men, some of whom they still stay in touch with. "I look at SigEp as one of the things that helped me stay in school and on course," says David. "You're surrounded by other men who were studying and pursuing degrees, and seeing them encouraged you to do the same." Continuing this opportunity for young men today is a cause the Dickeys have decided to contribute toward. "It's important for the fraternity to have a nice house and this house needs to be replaced. There's no question that if we can get a new house built it will have an impact on the future success of the chapter," adds David. Steve sums it up: "I really enjoyed the fraternity and the guys there. You've got to remember the good times and pony up." EXCEPTIONAL GPA Oklahoma Alpha adds another semester to its long line of successes due in part to its efforts in every facet of Greek life. Last semester the men of Sigma Phi Epsilon posted a 3.1 GPA, marking the 14th semester above both the all-men's and all-IFC GPAs. Even with this success, the brothers of Oklahoma Alpha aren't satisfied and are working toward establishing higher academic goals. RECOGNITION FOR HARD WORK Partnered with the women of Chi Omega, our chapter came home with the first place trophy in Freshman Follies this year. This marks the second time in four years SigEp has taken first place. Additionally, our brothers placed third in intramurals, Oklahoma Alpha was awarded the Exemplary Chapter Designation by the Interfraternity Council for 2013, and we put together an amazing house decoration for Homecoming with the women of Pi Beta Phi. CHAPTER LOOKS FORWARD TO PHILANTHROPIC GOALS In recent years Oklahoma Alpha built a tradition around SigEps for Ray Murphy. In continuing that philanthropic spirit, we are adding two new philanthropies this year. First and foremost is a new benefit concert during our annual Safari Week. The proceeds of this concert will go to benefit the Trey Kertz Scholarship for Cancer Survivors at OSU; one of Oklahoma Alpha's most inspiring and beloved brothers, Trey Kertz '11, lost his battle with a rare form of bone cancer last spring. Trey served as a model for every one of us. As a former VP of membership development, friend, brother, and mentor, Trey lives in the lifeblood of Sigma Phi Epsilon and Oklahoma Alpha, and we plan on contributing to the scholarship in his name for years to come. Seuss' SigEps is the other new philanthropy where SigEps will read to Stillwater kindergarteners and first graders on Dr. Seuss' birthday. Seuss being a SigEp (Dartmouth '25) we found it fitting that Oklahoma Alpha be the one to put Seuss' mark on the Stillwater community. SUMMER RECRUITMENT EVENTS PLANNED Thank you to all who have committed to the lifetime of brotherhood. It is important to grow and expand that brotherhood. This summer we are hosting recruitment events and we welcome alumni to provide information about students they know attending OSU. You can send your recommendations to VP of Recruitment Hunter Boeken '16 at (918) 361-5701 or hunter.boeken@okstate.edu. Furthermore, I invite any alumnus to stop by the house and meet our undergraduate brothers. Oklahoma Alpha's red doors will always welcome you. Fraternally, Kyle D. Krieger '15 President (214) 701-4686 | kyle.krieger@okstate.edu Chapter's Exemplary Performance Rewarded The cast of our first place Freshman Follies show, paired with the women of Chi Omega. Nick O'Hara '15, Kyle Krieger '15, John Crowder '15, and Sam Lemark '15 travel through Bavaria, Germany and Austria.
