Now $299 AWC Science Students partner with Arizona Game & Fish to provide Habi- tat for Arizona Desert Tortoise Yuma, AZ —Arizona Western College (AWC) Science students along with the Yuma area offices of the Arizona Game and Fish Department have part- nered to provide much needed habitat options for Arizona Desert Tortoises. Over the last year, AWC students and local Game & Fish personnel have built a tortoise habitat on campus. These dens were built to house tor- toises and give AWC science students the opportunity to care for these na- tive reptiles. In March of 2009 the project was able to utilize the space between the two science buildings to build the habitats. The Yuma and campus com- munities donated all the items to build the dens. The first den was completed in May of 2009. Within the last few months Celica Vigil, Science professor at AWC, and her science student crew built a second den. Eventually a walk- way will be built around the dens for observation. These dens are mainly used as an over-flow area to provide additional housing when Game & Fish has a high number of tortoises available for adoption. The local Game & Fish of- M 16, 2011 AWC provides habitat for AZ Tortoise fice was confident in professor Vigil and her student’s expertise and knew they would take great care of them. A secondary purpose for building the habitats was in the hopes of provid- ing younger students the opportunity to observe and learn about the Desert tortoise. On Thursday, March 17th, from 12:30-1:30pm AWC science and art students and Arizona Game & Fish personnel will gather at the tortoise dens on the AWC main campus to put the finishing touches on the dens. Area elementary schools will also be attend- ing the event. The media is invited to learn more about the dens created by the AWC students made from donated items and the Desert Tortoise adop- tion process. “The Arizona Game and Fish De- partment works closely with Arizona Western College to provide suitable habitat options for our captive desert tortoises,” commented Chris Bedinger, Arizona Game and Fish Public Infor- mation Officer. “Even with an adop- tion program in place, typically, there are more desert tortoises available for adoption than qualified applicants.” For more information on the Arizona Game and Fish Desert Tortoise Adop- tion process call (928) 342-0091. VETERANS POSTby Freddy Groves Stand Downs 2011 We’re now at the beginning of the Stand Down season for 2011. The Na- tional Coalition for Homeless Veterans has geared up and is ready to roll. Stand Downs started during the Viet- nam War when combat troops were given a safe place to get cleaned up and just decompress. Stand Downs now are for homeless veterans. If you’re a homeless veteran, these Stand Downs are for you. You are in- vited to attend and get any help or fellowship you may need. There will be medical and dental services, cloth- ing, food, legal help, substance help, housing services, job counseling. Vari- ous agencies will have representatives there as well, such as Social Security and the Department of Veterans Af- fairs. If your situation is different and you’re in a position to either host or volunteer at a Stand Down, step up. Any number of organizations could use your help: the VA, veterans service groups, home- less shelters and more all get together to hold Stand Down events. in your area, see the guide on the site or call them. They’ll be able to direct you to an existing group that could use your help or your donations, but they’ll also be able to assist in getting you started. There are different levels of Stand Downs. Some are health-cen- tered. Some are full three-day events with a full range of services. Others focus on jobs and employment. Start now: It can take a year to fully prepare to host a Stand Down. For a 2011 schedule of dates and lo- cations, go to the coalition’s website at www.nchv.org. Click on Stand Down, then on 2011 Stand Downs. To contact the NCHV, call (800) VET- HELP. For even more Stand Down events, go to www.va.gov and put “Stand Down 2011” in the search box. Write to Freddy Groves in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O.
