Beta Tau ConnSKtion 2 J ennifer Leak '89 joined Beta Tau during her sophomore year at the University of Florida after feeling at home with the women of Sigma Kappa. She was proud to be a part of a sisterhood that worked hard to meet quota every semester and had a presence on campus. Jennifer earned a bachelor of science in telecommunication with a minor in business administration. Today she is the director of communications for Roswell Presbyterian Church (RPC) in Roswell, Georgia, a position she has held for over a year. RPC has a membership of over 2,600. Jennifer manages the website, media relations, and all internal and external communications. Jennifer was living in the chapter house in 1990, during the time the serial killer, Danny Rolling, was still thought to be at large. Rolling killed five University of Florida students. This troubling time heightened the importance of the sisterhood and the Sigma Kappa chapter house became one of the safest places to be. Jennifer recalls all the out-of-house members sleeping on the floor of the chapter house, since living in an apartment was more vulnerable. "The ability to have that place to come to and the security of Sigma Kappa looking out for us kept us all going," Jennifer said. Jennifer urges the undergraduates to take their studies seriously, but not to be afraid to enjoy these years and test the waters. "Don't take your time at college for granted," Jennifer said, "There are a lot of opportunities to expand your horizons and get out of your comfort zone." She is also an advocate of study abroad programs. Jennifer still maintains many of the friendships gained in Beta Tau. "It's nice to have friends that were a part of your life and knew you in college that are still a part of your life now," Jennifer said. She encourages other alumnae who had good connections with their sisters to get back in touch. Jennifer remains a huge fan of the Florida Gators, as well as for the Atlanta Braves. She currently lives in Alpharetta, Georgia. You can contact her at jennifer.s.leak@gmail.com. Jennifer Leak '89 encourages undergraduates to expand Horizons in coLLege Jennifer S. Here is just a glimpse of the many memories created. M arried into a military family, Lee Petersen Hancock '71 grew accustomed to frequently moving. The skills she learned from Sigma Kappa made the ability to interact with all kinds of people invaluable. "The recruitment process where I had to talk to strangers and the sisterhood where I was part of so many people drew me out of myself, giving me confidence later," Lee said. "This helped me in seeking employment and fitting in during our many moves." Lee earned a bachelor of arts in history after taking a year off from school and returned part-time while working two jobs to put herself through her final year. Today, Lee is a Department of Defense (DOD) contractor with MacAulay-Brown Inc. Working for the Air Combat Command on Langley Air Force Base, she assists her branch with the world- wide Air Operations Centers (AOC), improving their capabilities. These AOCs direct the air war efforts and Lee schedules the testing to keep them current, as well as acting as a generalist, providing protocol support for visiting dignitaries and organizational expertise to her senior military leadership.
