Beta Tau ConnSKtion A s a transfer student from Florida State University in her senior year, Mary Louise DeWolf '51 only had a short time to enjoy her sorority life with Sigma Kappa. While her time with the chapter was brief, Mary was pleased with the friendships she was able to make and the influence the chapter values had on her life. "Sigma Kappa reinforced my sense of self-worth," Mary Louise said. Her interest in sorority life was spurred by her older sister's involvement in Greek life at Florida State University. Although Mary Louise did not join the same sorority, she was proud to have that shared sorority experience when she joined Sigma Kappa. Mary Louise received a bachelor of science and a master of education from the University of Florida and had a 30-year career as a high school teacher of biology and chemistry in Florida, Georgia, California, and England. Following that, she taught biology at the junior college level in Jacksonville before becoming a Unitarian Universalist co-district executive for Florida and several other southern states for eight years. Mary Louise's career took a turn from science to religion when she decided to become a minister with the Unitarian Universalist Association, a liberal religious group focused on shared values and welcoming to people of different beliefs. She earned a master of religious studies from the University of South Florida in Tampa and enjoyed several years serving her congregation at Nature Coast Unitarian Universalist in Citrus County, where she was the recipient of the minister emerita. In 2011, Mary Louise published her book, A Cracker Gal Finds Religion, a compilation of stories, poems, and sermons she has written since 1991. Today Mary Louise is retired and volunteers as the vice president of the Crystal River Democratic Club. "I wanted to be connected to a cause in which I believed," Mary Louise said. Mary Louise and her husband, Robert Campbell, live in Crystal River, Florida. You can contact her at mdewolf@earthlink.net. It's cliché, but I am starting this year fresh with the goal to be an improved me. This spans the usual health and fitness, to creating and living by a budget, to reading daily, and many others. I see a better me starting from within and then flowing outward to my friendships and community. The last few weeks have been a great kickoff, and I am thriving to do more. What are you doing for yourself? For others? What about for your sisterhood? On April 2, 1949, Sigma Kappa Sorority extended a new charter to start the Beta Tau Chapter on the University of Florida campus. Over the last 65 years, the Beta Tau Chapter has initiated nearly 2,000 sisters into the mystic bond. We would like invite you to join all of your sisters in celebrating 65 years of Beta Tau legacy. Please plan to attend the 65th anniversary weekend April 5 and 6 to commemorate the decades of sisterhood, successes, and connect with your sisters of all eras. Please enjoy this special newsletter, which includes many photos across the 65 years of Beta Tau. Your sisters would love to keep up with you. Don't forget to send in your alumnae information/ biographical update that you received a few weeks ago and let us know if you are in touch with a "lost" sister so we can get her reconnected. Thank you to those of you who have already sent your form back in. Information will continue to be collected and will be used in future issues of the newsletter. For me, there has been a great deal of reflection on the past and planning for the future as I began 2014. I feel empowered to do more with each step forward. If you are in need of a reboot, too, I encourage you to pick an area to start and hopefully your momentum will propel you forward!
