Fellow Spartan Carlos Tapia received an honorable men- tion and Red Bluff’s Roxy Luppino received an honorable mention to the All-League girls team. Red Bluff coach Stan Twitchell said McInnis received votes from all four of the other EAL-South coaches. “He was a really smart defender all year and just so con- sistent and solid in leading us in scoring,” Twitchell said. Tapia, a senior, received an honorable mention. “I just thought it was great he was recognized, because Carlos came a long way,” Twitchell said. “I think he was one of the best shooters in the league and I think it’s a nice way for him to end his career.” Luppino also ended her high career with an honorable mention honor. “I’m proud of the way she handled playing the point guard this year,” Lady Spartans coach Kathy Brandt said. “She matured to the fact she could do that and led our team night in and night out.” Brandt said Luppino also received an invitation to the Lions 16th All-Star Game. ALUMNI Trevor Gipson and Cody Gappa, former Red Bluff High School standout baseball play- ers, didn’t know much about the intense rivalry between the Feather River Golden Eagles and the Butte College Roadrunners when they made decisions to play for Feather River. They do now. Both players are excited to be going to Butte to kick off Golden Valley Conference play this Fri- day. “This is fun, it’s what we play for,” Gappa said. “I’m looking forward to playing those guys and I’m expecting to have a lot of family and friends come down for the game. There is a big rivalry between these two teams and it’s great to be a part of that.” The teams meet for three games this weekend, and it will be a show down series between two of the best community col- lege baseball programs in the nation. Currently, Perfect Game USA ranks Feather River as the 10th best program in the country, while Butte is ranked at 17. Butte College also features one of Gipson and Gappa’s team- mates at Red Bluff, relief pitcher Scott Avery as well as Corning graduate Tanner McIntyre. Both schools have impressive records to start the season, with Butte undefeated and Feather River at 9-3. Gipson said he is not at all worried about Butte’s perfect record. “It’s all about the next game. You play them one at a time and you win them one at a time. Of course we expect to beat Butte, you have to,” he said. The first game takes place Fri- day at 2 p.m. at Cowan Stadium on the Butte College campus and is followed by a doubleheader in Quincy on Saturday, starting at noon. ALAMEDA (AP) — The Oakland Raiders promoted assistant Chuck Bresnahan to defensive coordinator Mon- day, just weeks after bringing him back for a second stint with the organization. Oakland hired Bresnahan last month as a defensive assis- tant, but did not immediately specify his duties. Coach Hue Jackson said he had talked to some people outside the orga- nization about the job, but stuck with a coach he had worked with before in Cincinnati. ‘‘The fact that I’ve had the chance to be in defensive meetings with Chuck and watch him lead the defensive staff made it an easy decision to name him our defensive coordi- nator,’’ Jackson said in a statement. ‘‘I am impressed with his passion, attention to detail and energy. This staff gives us the opportunity to have one of the top defenses in the NFL.’’ The Raiders have made significant changes on their defensive staff since Jackson replaced Tom Cable as head coach in January. Hall of Famer Rod Woodson was brought on to coach the cornerbacks and Greg Biekert was promot- ed to linebackers coach. Both Woodson and Biekert played for Bresnahan during his stint as defensive coordinator of the Raiders from 2000- See HIRE, page 2B
