2A – Daily News – Wednesday, March 2, 2011 Community people&events Bunco fundraiser Genie Murdock You Matter A Bunco fundraiser to benefit Landon Touvell is planned for 6-9:30 p.m. on Friday, March 18, at New Life Assembly, 660 Solano St., in Corning. Cost is $15. Landon, a 7-year-old boy from Capay, was diag- nosed with leukemia in October 2009 and although his prognosis is good, it will be a long journey of much needed care and attention. Medical and travel expenses add stress to what is already the most difficult experience a family can endure. Landon is on a maintenance program, which consists of weekly or every other week treatments at the hospital and a daily medication regimen instead of two to four weeks at the hospital. Treatment is expected to last through January 2013. Please show your support for Landon and the Touvell family by purchasing Bunco tickets for a fun-filled event. There will be raffles and a dessert auction. For more information call 824-3481. SECRET WITNESS 529-1268 A program of Tehama County Neighborhood Watch Program, Inc. Setting it straight –––––––– It is the policy of the Daily News to correct as quickly as possible all errors in fact that have been published in the newspaper. If you feel a factual error has been made in a news story, call the news department at 527-2153. You matter columns have become a signature in my series. They are divinely inspired by a lov- ing God that wants you to know that who you are makes him smile. Some find it politically incorrect to speak about God in a newspaper column. I am perfectly willing to see my column moved to Sunday’s edition if it makes it easier to digest. No matter who you are, what your belief system or how you prefer to receive information, there is one thing that can’t be denied, Genie Murdock matters. I was driving to work yesterday, taking in the beauty of the mountain view as I headed north up I-5 when Genie popped into my head in that way that happens when I know a person is the next You Matter focus. I was overcome with thoughts about what makes Genie unique and special; how she is always pos- itive and friendly and loves her family. I thought to myself, "is that it? Is that why she matters"? Cer- tainly positive qualities make any- one matter, but there is more to Genie. Not that long ago I was helping a friend who was trying to design a new work space. She needed some- one who could take a dreary area and bring it to life. Using Facebook as a medium to ask for help, Genie stepped up and volunteered to help without any hesitation even though she didn’t know the woman at all. Together, they created a beautiful space that bene- fits all who enter that busi- ness and two new friends were made. That is what Genie does, she beautifies. She is a staging expert for Macy’s, a job that fell into her lap and is divinely suit- ed to her. She creates entic- ing displays that comfort, emote and excite. She is beauty from within and expressed from without. Thinking about Genie yesterday, I realized she would be the next You Matter focus and unexpectedly today I found myself in the very room she helped my friend create. I took the time to look around and I felt the care that Genie took to make this space warm, invit- ing and calming; all the things that Genie is. What a gift to beautify the world and create opportunities for others to soak it all in. What can you do to beautify Faydra Rector You Matter this world? What can you do to leave a mark, an impression, an impact for others? Long after Genie is gone, her cre- ativity impacts people. What can you do to make an impact? Be like Genie, go forth and decorate your world and make it a beautiful place for oth- ers. When someone needs help, reach out without even knowing them and offer your experience. Give your time, energy and talent and you may make a new friend and create a last- ing experience for some- one else’s benefit.
