Friday, February 25, 2011 – Daily News – 7B NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks stabilized Thursday after two days of sharp declines brought on by Libya’s deepening political crisis. The Dow Jones industrial average recouped much of its losses after oil prices eased in the afternoon, but still ended down for a third straight day. Broader market indicators were mixed. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index lost 1 point and the Nasdaq composite index rose 15. Investors were relieved to see oil prices fall for the first time in nine days after the International Energy Agency said fighting between forces loyal to Moammar Gadhafi and anti-government protesters in Libya were not affecting oil inventories as much as analysts had feared. Oil fell 82 cents to settle at $97.28 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, having traded as high as Stocks stabilize as crude prices ease; Dow off 37 Wall Street tion coming out the country is worrying.” The Dow Jones industrial $103.41 earlier in the day. Oil has jumped 18 percent since Feb. 15 while anti-government protests swept through coun- tries in North Africa and the Middle East. Regimes in two of Libya’s neighbors, Tunisia and Egypt, have fallen in the past month. Traders are worried that fighting could threaten Libya’s oil production and spread to other countries in the region, such as Saudi Arabia, the world’s second-largest produc- er. Higher oil prices can also slow the U.S. economy by increasing transportation costs. Reports of ample oil inven- tories “calmed some of the short-term fears in the market,” said Bruce McCain, chief investment strategist at Key Private Bank. “But the fact that there is very little real informa- average fell 37.28 points, or 0.3 percent, to 12,068.50. It had been down as much as 122 earlier in the day. Over the pre- vious two days the Dow lost 285 points, or 2.3 percent, the largest drop since August 12. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index fell 1.30, or 0.1 percent, to 1,306.10. The S&P was also down for a third straight day. The Nasdaq composite bucked the trend. It rose 14.91 points, or 0.5 percent, to 2,737.90. The mixed stock perfor- mance came after the Labor Department reported that fewer people applied for unemploy- ment benefits last week, a sign that the job market is recover- ing. The four-week average for applications, a figure closely watched by financial analysts, fell to its lowest level in more than two and a half years. new homes fell significantly in January. Several companies rose after announcing better than expected earnings. The housing market, howev- er, continued to lag. The Com- merce Department said sales of Feds unveil solar-powered groundwater cleanup DAVIS (AP) — Feder- al environmental officials have begun using solar- powered gear to clean up a Superfund site near Sacra- mento in a project they say could serve as a model for hundreds of other con- taminated areas in the country. ‘‘Our goal should be to clean up the environment in the greenest way possi- ble, and this new treat- ment plant sets the bench- mark for future actions,’’ said U.S. Environmental Protection Agency region- al administrator Jared Blumenfeld, who activat- ed the system Wednesday at the Frontier Fertilizer Superfund Site in Davis. The first federal groundwater cleanup powered by solar energy is being used to pump and filter tainted groundwater in one part of the eight- acre site. Another system on the site will use heated electri- cal rods to convert water and contaminants into a noxious gas. The gas will then be pumped to the sur- face and run through car- bon filters to remove chemicals. “This is about convert- ing a highly contaminated property into a productive part of the community,’’ said Linda Adams, secre- tary of the California Environmental Protection Agency. Two pesticide compa- nies, Frontier and its pre- decessor, Barber and Rowland Co., used the site from the 1960s to the 1980s to store hazardous pesticides, officials said. Authorities learned about the safety problems in the mid-1980s, when a Priceline.com Inc. jumped 8.5 percent after the online travel service reported a 73 percent surge in fourth-quarter earnings and raised its income forecast for the current quarter. Target Corp. rose 3.5 percent after the retailer reported an 11 percent gain in profit. H&R Block Inc. rose 5 percent after the tax preparation company said it expected its earning to be close to a break-even point in its fiscal third quarter. Bond prices rose, pushing their yields lower. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell to 3.46 percent from 3.49 per- cent late Wednesday. Rising and falling shares were about even on the New York Stock Exchange. Consol- idated volume came to 5.2 bil- lion shares. Art contest draws Google pet dog died after wading into a pond at the site, said Bonnie Arthur, remedial project manager for the EPA’s Superfund Divi- sion. Environmental officials said the technology being used will allow the site to be cleaned up in 30 years instead of the original pro- jection of 150 years. The project’s estimated price tag of more than $40 million is being borne by the federal government after it was determined that Frontier Fertilizer couldn’t pay for it. into another privacy flap SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Google thought it was doing a good deed last month when it opened an annu- al art contest to more kids across the United States. The gesture instead has turned into another oppor- tunity for Google Inc.’s critics to question whether the Internet search leader is overstepping privacy bound- aries by seeking too much information from its users. In this case, Google initially asked parents to pro- vide the final four digits of their children’s Social Security numbers along with their dates and cities of birth during the first month of its fourth annual “Doo- dle 4 Google.” Google dropped the request for the partial Social Security numbers last week. But Google’s about-face evidently didn’t stop a spate of blog postings this week wondering if Google had violated its “don’t be evil” motto.
