Smith, including a glimpse of his soon-to-be-released worship project Sovereign. Recently I had the privilege of joining a few other Christian radio programmers in Nashville as we spent some time with the musical genius that is Michael W. Smith. We were treated to a live video recording of some of his new songs. These will comprise a DVD that is part of the new CD, Sovereign. After the live-recording experience, we were invited to Michael's personal studio in Franklin, Tenn., to hear a few stories surrounding the new songs. Suffice it to say this new collection of corporate and anthemic worship songs will be worth the wait when the album debuts later this spring. Having been a fan of Smith's music since I was a teenager, I was interested to learn more about the man behind the music. His studio revealed snapshots of the things that are very important to him. Instead of gold records and Dove awards, this Civil War-era decorwas simple and unassuming. One framed item caught my eye as soon as I walked in the door. It was a lined piece of notebook paper with someone's handwriting on it. After examining it more closely I realized this was the lyrics to the song "Friends" that helped launch Smith's music career. When asked about it, he was eager to share the remarkable story behind this iconic song. His wife Debbie thought it would be a good idea for she and Smith to write a song for a pastor friend who would be moving soon. Smith agreed it was a good idea but he did not think they could not have one ready for the Bible study that night as she hoped. Undaunted, Debbie went into a room and began to write. An hour or so later she emerged with the piece of paper that was now hanging in the frame on the wall. Michael, though impressed with what she had done, still didn't think the song could be completed that afternoon. God had other plans. Once he sat down to work on the music side of the song, the melody came together in less than five minutes. Look for Sovereign, the cd and dvd, later this spring Sovereign Set for Spring by STEVE TURLEY STEVE TURLEY, Station manager Christian 107.3 COMMENTS? Editor@upandcomin- gweekly.com.
