Email shows top officer's effort to shield bin Laden photos WASHINGTON (AP) — A newly-released email shows that 11 days after the killing of terror leader Osama bin Laden in 2011, the U.S. mili- tary's top special opera- tions officer ordered sub- ordinates to destroy any photographs of the al- Qaida founder's corpse or turn them over to the CIA. The email was obtained under a freedom of information request by the conservative legal group Judicial Watch. The document, released Mon- day by the group, shows that Adm. William McRaven, who heads the U.S. Special Operations Command, told military officers on May 13, 2011 that photos of bin Laden's remains should have been sent to the CIA or already destroyed. Bin Laden was killed by a special opera- tions team in Pakistan on May 2, 2011. McRaven's order to purge the bin Laden mate- rial came 10 days after The Associated Press asked for the photos and other documents under the U.S. Freedom of Information Act. Typical- ly, when a freedom of information request is filed to a government agency, the agency is obliged to preserve the material sought — even if the agency later denies the request. On May 3, 2011, the AP asked Special Opera- tions Command's Free- dom of Information/Pri- vacy Act Division office for ''copies of all e-mails sent from and to the U.S. government account or accounts'' of McRaven referencing bin Laden. McRaven was then vice admiral. A May 4, 2011 response from the command's FOIA office to the AP acknowl- edged the bin Laden docu- ment request and said it had been assigned for pro- cessing. AP did not receive a copy of the McRaven email obtained by Judicial Watch. Explosion at NH plant P E T E R B O RO U G H , N.H. (AP) — A spokes- woman at a New Hamp- shire ball bearings plant says an explosion there doesn't appear to have caused any life-threatening injuries. Spokeswoman Kathy Gerrity says people were hurt in the Monday after- noon explosion at New Hampshire Ball Bearings Inc. in Peterborough but she's unsure how many. She says it's unclear what caused the explosion. Gerrity says the building was evacuated, which is standard procedure. She says she's unsure how many people were inside but there are usually about 450 work- ing at that time. The southwest New Hampshire plant employs 700 people. New Hampshire Ball Bearings' corporate head- quarters are in Chatsworth, Calif. It's a division of Japanese company Minebea. 'Dumb Starbucks' in Los Angeles generates lines, social media buzz LOS ANGELES (AP) — It's a caffeine-charged Hollywood whodunit: Just whose bright idea was the ''Dumb Starbucks'' coffee shop that popped up and started serving free drinks from the corner of an other- wise uncelebrated strip mall. On Monday morning, a line from the store wound alongside the parking lot and up the block, with some patrons stepping out to snap pictures in front of a green awning and mermaid logo that is familiar — except that the word ''Dumb'' is prominently featured. They weren't coming for gourmet fare: Their descrip- tions of the coffee ranged from ''horrible'' to ''bitter,'' and one parent said his daughter complained that the hot chocolate was like water. Instead, they are just coming to say they came, and to score a white paper cup with a sticker bearing the curious logo. ''It was a pretty dumb idea to come out in the cold'' and wait for nearly two hours to get a coffee, joked Anthony Solis, who lives in nearby Hollywood. Mormons to weigh in on gay marriage SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The Mormon church and a coalition of religious organizations are expected to file an argument to a federal appeals court by midnight explaining why they believe Utah's same- sex marriage ban should stand. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will file a ''friend of the court'' brief, along with Catholic, Southern Baptist and Lutheran organizations and the National Associa- tion of Evangelicals, court records show. The brief is being handled by the Salt Lake City law firm that rep- resents the Mormon church, Kirton and McConkie. Monday is the deadline for filings in support of Utah before the Denver-based 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Other groups and organizations have already submitted their arguments, including a group of attor- ney generals from 10 states who argue same-sex mar- riage is not part of Ameri- can tradition. 5B Tuesday, February 11, 2014 – Daily News Landscape/Fence Steve's Tractor & Landscape Service • Fence Building • Landscaping • Trenching • Rototilling • Disking • Mowing • Ridging • Post Hole Digging • Blade Work • Sprinkler Installation • Concrete Work Cont.
