BOYS HOOPS East Nicolaus 56 Los Molinos 52 By RICHGREENE DNSports Editor LOSMOLINOS— In a back-and- forth thriller East Nicolaus made buck- ets when they counted most and ended the Bulldogs season 56-52, Wednesday night, in a Division V first round play- off game. Riley Shill was making buckets all night for visiting East Nicolaus. He opened the game with the Spartans’ first eight points and he closed the night with their final two. Shill’s two free throws with 3.2 sec- onds remaining sealed the first round upset and a fourth quarter comeback. On his way to a game-high 27-point performance Shill regained the lead for the Spartans with a 3-pointer with around 2 minutes to go. Dom Ceja came back for Los Moli- nos and nailed an acrobatic layup to tie it at 52-52. GIRLS HOOPS Oroville 42 Red Bluff 69 Then Allan DaPrato broke the tie with 1:11 remaining when he scooped an offensive rebound off of the floor and put it in for a 54-52 Spartans lead. Los Molinos had three cracks to tie in the final minute, but missed a shot and turned the ball over twice. It was a heartbreaking loss for the Bulldogs who erased a 12-point third quarter deficit to hold a lead and momentum for much of the fourth quarter. On the first play of the second half, the Spartans’ near 7-footer Alex Weber, who finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds, converted an and-one basket and free throw to give East Nicolaus a 32-21 lead. Los Molinos responded. The Bulldogs switched to a full court press and their aggressive defense brought alive their offense. The Bulldogs went on a 26-9 run behind the hot shooting of Sean Con- rad, who made seven 3-pointers on the night on his way to 25 points. Senior Kevin Garnica was a force on the boards, grabbing 10 of them of them to go along with six points and together, Tuesday night, as the Lady Spartans ended the season on a positive note with a 69-42 win over Oroville. The game also marked Senior Night and a celebra- tion of Red Bluff’s lone senior — Roxy Luppino. A depleted Red Bluff squad, who only dressed seven players, shot 50 per- cent from the field. Lottie Jones started the game on fire, scoring eight points and pulling down three boards as Red Bluff raced off to a 20-8 lead. Jones continued her surge in the second quarter, scoring six more points. Oroville hit a trio of 3- pointers in a row to close the gap, but the Spartans switched their defense and took a 35-20 lead into half- time. In the third quarter Cori Schatz stepped up, adding seven points as Red Bluff extended their lead ot 53-31. Schatz added eight more points in the fourth quarter and Red Bluff finished off a 69-42 win. Red Bluff’s 50 percent shooting was a season high, as were their 42 rebounds. They also committed a sea- son low mark of 18 turnovers. Schatz finished with 21 points and 10 rebounds and Jones ended with 19 points and eight rebounds.
