Your thoughts? -- Nancy, e-mail Dear Nancy: Despite negative information in the media as of late, I do not think you should fear placing your money in any U.S. bank or credit union that is fully insured by the FDIC. As long as you do not exceed $250,000 in your account, you can rest easy knowing that even if that bank were to fail, your money is safe and insured. That being said, I believe that your money fears are misplaced. Rather than worrying about the safety of your funds, you need to be concerned about buying power. The U.S. dollar is losing value as more and more of them are being released into the economy. A rea- sonable fear is that this may surely lead to inflation -- where every- thing gets more valuable except money. Dear Mary: My husband and I are separated. He completed a rental agreement for an apartment and included my name and Social Security number. They told him it was required because we are still legally married. Will I be legally responsible for the rent? By way of informa- tion only, I can tell you that as a general rule, spouses are liable for debts incurred by one another. If you and your spouse have a shared credit card in both of your names, you are both liable for the debt. If your spouse has loans or credit in only his name, you are generally not liable unless you live in one of the nine community property states (Ari- zona, California, Idaho, Louisiana, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, Wash- ington and Wisconsin). My understanding is that in com- munity property states, your com- munity property is liable for debts accrued by you or your spouse dur- ing the marriage. I strongly suggest that you con- tact an attorney immediately. Since you do not live in one of the nine states, you want to make sure that your identity, including your Social Security number and possi- valued together at $300, were reported stolen from the vehicle. The suspect was described as a heavy- built man, possibly Hispan- ic, but sheriff’s deputies were unable to locate him. The incident occured sometime between 9 and 11:30 p.m. Monday. Damages were estimated at $200. • Graffiti was reported Tuesday on the back of Big 5 Sporting Goods. “SUR- SID13” was found written on a structure surrounding a garbage container. The tagging occured sometime the evening of Feb. 17. Damages were estimated at $50. A report was made but both parties declined medical attention. •A 71-year-old Cotton- wood man received minor injuries in a collision at bly even your signature, has not been used fraudulently. Dear Mary: We are about to pay Mary Hunt off our mortgage after 20 years and two kids! The house needs a lot of work. Without going into debt, what is the best way to remodel? Our plan is to save the amount of our monthly mortgage payment, so we can do the floors, a few windows, the kitchen flooring, etc. It will take a while on a cash-only basis, but we're willing to wait. Any comments? -- Michelle, e-mail Dear Michelle: Great Everyday Cheapskate news and congratulations! I couldn't have come up with a better plan than to continue making your house payments, now to The Bank of Michelle. Then, pay as you go. Do you have a question for Mary? E-mail her at mary@everydaycheapskate.com, or write to Everyday Cheapskate, P.O. Box 2135, Paramount, CA 90723. He was contacted shortly after- ward at his residence, arrested and booked into Tehama County Jail. Bail was set at $5,000. Hit and run • Garrett Greenhaw, 17, of Anderson was driving west on Lake California Drive, east of Bowman Road, when an unknown driver in a white pickup tried to pass Greenhaw, saw another vehicle coming in the opposing lane and pulled back behind Green- haw, hitting Greenhaw’s pickup, causing minor damage to both.
