Sunday, Feb. 2 is Super Bowl Sunday, which means home "tailgate" parties will be breaking out all over America. At the same time, Animal Planet is counterprogramming with its annual canine contest, the "Puppy Bowl" (celebrating its 10th anniversary this year). Later in the week, on Friday, Feb. 7, is the Opening Ceremony for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, so another whole menu might be in order. Chef Marcela Valladolid of Food Network's Saturday show "The Kitchen" steps up to answer a few questions to help viewers navigate the challenge of feeding rabid sports fans. Q: If calories are no object, what's your optimal menu for a Super Bowl party? A: It's all about the wings! I make these amazing chicken wings with an ancho chile glaze and top it with pecans; they are absolutely amazing. Serve them with roasted chipotle baby red potatoes and your favorite tequila cocktail, and everyone will love you. Q: What's the best menu for someone who can't cook but doesn't just want chips, dip and other prepackaged foods? A: A meat and cheese board is always a huge success. Serve them on a nice wooden cutting board with sliced fresh baguette and a fig jam, and your life will be easier. You can also ask your guests to each bring something, and you provide the beverage. Q: Which are the top foods to avoid on a Super Bowl buffet menu and why? A: Foods that don't hold up well at room temperature – seafood, for example. It's best to stick to salads, casseroles, appetizers. Things that need silverware (you need to be able to have food in one hand and a drink in another). Avoid foods that need last- minute assembly. Q: What are the must-haves? A: At my house, it's not a party without tequila. Always make sure there are enough drinks and food for your guests. Q: Later in the week is the Opening Ceremony for the Sochi Olympics, which take place in Russia. If viewers want to have a Russian-themed party, what do you needs besides vodka? A: Caviar pairs perfectly with beer. I would highly recommend caviar. Q: What makes sports party food special for you? A: Party food in general brings me back to when I was growing up as a kid in Tijuana. I have a huge family, so we would gather at my grandparents' home for parties all the time. Being that my grandfather was a chef, there was always an abundance of food at all of our family gatherings. BY KATE O'HARE Marcela Valladolid Marcela Valladolid leaves 'The Kitchen' to go tailgating "Ice Castles" (2010): A sweet movie for the PG crowd and girls enchanted by sequined skirts and twirling on the ice. Alexis Winston (Taylor Firth) desperately wanted to become a champion figure skater. It's a grueling life, and she must leave her family and boyfriend (Rob Mayes) behind to take her skills to the next level. After being blinded in an accident, she falls in love with her beau again. "Blades of Glory" (2007): Will Ferrell as Chazz Michael Michaels and Jon Heder as Jimmy MacElroy are ridiculously silly as Olympic skaters stripped of their medals. They need to be back on the ice and think they have found a way back into competition: as a pairs team. Chazz may have had his brains permanently frozen by ice. How else to explain lines such as "We love you, Denver, city by the bay!" "Miracle" (2004): It's the inspirational, true story of the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team that skated to a thrilling win over the supposedly unbeatable Russian team. Coach Herb Brooks (Kurt Russell) turned a bunch of college players into an amazing team. His pep talk to the squad is the stuff legends are made from: "If we played 'em 10 times, they might win nine, but not this game. Not tonight. ... Tonight, we are the greatest hockey team in the world. ... I am sick and tired of hearing what a great hockey team the Soviets have. Screw 'em! This is your time. Now go out there and take it." "Slap Shot" (1977): Just because any chance to watch Paul Newman should not be missed, check him out as Reg Dunlop, a player and coach on a failing minor league team. Dunlop's most developed quality is scamming people. When he discovers that the team will disband at the end of the season, Dunlop decides to save it. He realizes that the team's only chance of winning – outside of skill, that is – is violence. He plays brothers who he had previously benched for having no useful skills, until he realized their real talent – thuggery.
